421  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Offspring / Re: Quest and Kendal - Toronto/Don Mills on: 22-Apr-11, 01:48:30 PM
Thanks for those calming and supportive words Dumpster Kitty. I assure everyone, as a voice for CPF, that we are on top of things. A full report will be posted soon. Volunteers and staff of CPF have been on scene and are even now, on this Good Friday. Bruce was on scene I suspect pre-sunrise. With things as they are CPF wants to give a full, accurate account of things, not wishing to leave room for speculation, nor misunderstandings. The world is watching, we want to give everyone the correct information and do all we can to do whats in the best interest of all parties involved, most especially Quest and Kendal. We do realize people around the world are waiting for news and are sensitive to those needs. An excited utterance or misplaced words will not only ill inform but could start a firestorm that does damage, so please hang in and know that things are being monitored and done in a timely, safe manner.

Well put Big Frank!  It is so hard when we are sitting and waiting at the end of some of the fastest communication in the world.

Many don't realize how much effort it takes to plan and get approval to make changes in the best interest of the falcons.  I suspect there was much discussion between the Ministry of Natural Resources (government) and the Canadian Peregrine Foundation (non-profit organization). I work in a regulated industry and deal with several governmental agencies.  Movement is never as fast as we would like it to be, and there are so many restrictions, and interpretation of regulations.

Within the last couple of years, Ontario Canada enacted a renewed Endangered Species Act.  As in the US, once Quest laid her egg, that likely changed the status of the nestsite under the Endangered Species Act to no intervention. Quest probably opened a short window of opportunity when the first egg came off the ledge.

Thanks to the efforts of both CPF and MNH, our gal Quest has her home for the 2011 season.

Beauty was hungry and waiting for Archer was not an option. She left for 21 minutes, had a quick meal and came back. Sad

OBVIOUSLY!

Thanks for the article.  Not as heavy or technical as the last one.  I'm still wading through it.  I found this article fun to read and interesting about the night flying.  We know that to be true in Rochester because of the residual lighting.

I believe she's on the roof.

They are on the roof with a barely graveled scrape - there is no nest box.

I thought it was on the roof as well, but after watching the media videos that ezsha posted, it looks like the scrape is on the next level down on a ledge in front of windows.

Pic #1 in MAK's album is the ORB (Orange Railing Bldg).  The Pigeon Box is not part of the ORB, it is a large, hollow square structure at the east end of the large chute that starts at the blue bldg and stretches east to the Pigeon Box.  The Pigeon Box is hollow and if you look up inside, you can see I-Beams stretching from one side to the other.  We see Pigeons flying up inside this square structure all the time.  I'm sure they considered this a safe haven from you know who.  One day I saw Lady Pefa fly up there and when I checked it out with the scope, I could see her tail hanging down.  She was sitting on one of the I-Beams.

She may be using this, #1 - to get out of the weather (kind of like M&K and A&B use the elevator shaft on the OCSR) and/or #2 - to grab unsuspecting Pigeons as they fly up into their Box, unaware that there is a Pefa in their midst!

I will be holding a class soon on how to keep track of these highly technical names for the buildings/structures at Kodak Park.   rofl

Geesh - I thought I had it down...and I screwed up too.  No wonder Margaret is confused. I corrected the other post in case anyone else reads it.

Attached is a photo ID...did I get it right?

Me three MAK & Carol.  I was ready to go as soon as I heard; then thought maybe last weekend...but filing my taxes got in the way!  No excuses now, but if we wait a little, there may be more eggs to count.  Phooey - I'm dying hyper to make a trip up there.

I wasn't sure where to ask this question, but I'll start here.  The PPH, the Pigeon Box, and the nook.  I think they were identified in the pic posted, but I'm still confused when I see them mentioned in a tweet.  Are PPH and Pigeon Box the same thing?   Is that thought to be a nest site by watchers at KP?
Is the nook just a hiding area at KP?
So many things are familiar, but not KP ...at least to me.  And, I've been there (only once) and I've looked at the photo, but ???
It seem A is at NB more often, is he still visiting LP at the "still"?

I can't get into my flickr account to repost the picture, but...PPH & nook are near each other on the blue building to the left.  The pigeon box is the rectangular structure on the right at the top of the diagonal chute over the orange rail building.

Margaret – the NOOK is part of the black stripe/ledge on the blue building.  It is the SE corner of the black ledge where LP hides behind the dark blue funnel-like structure.

PPH is the pigeon poop hole that is also behind the dark blue funnel-like structure. It is  below the black stripe and just below the white Ibeam (where LP sits).  This is where the watchers think LP would lay eggs.

EDITED: The PIGEON BOX is the rectangular structure at the right end of the gray diagonal chute (not over ORB). Carol says there are beams on the inside and both pigeons and LP fly up in there to perch.  Today when we couldn't find LP, she flew out from there later.  Maybe LP was there to get out of wind.

You're correct – now that A&B are brooding, they take turns incubating, and he is spending more time in the nestbox on the eggs.  Beauty usually spends the night on the eggs, so there is a possibility that A has scooted over to KP in the evening or early morning.  No one has been at KP to confirm.
