WanderingFalcon (Carol P.): Wow! That was intense. Just spent 15 freezing cold mins watching the Charlotte pefa hunt over the river. 2 ducks don't know what hit them. Hoping we get to see some pics. This peregrine is one feisty female. I also had an intense minute yesterday watching Charbay=CB (my acronym because it is easy to text) attacking and chasing the red-tail away from her territory on the Irondequoit bridge. It happened so fast, I didn't have time to get out of the car and take pictures. I think this pefa is hunting and staying in the Charlotte area during the day, and roosting near the Irondequoit Bay bridge. It sounds like we have 2 falcons, but comparing the pictures, they look like the same bird. Thank you Dana for discovering this beautiful falcon! If anyone hasn't seen Dana's fantastic pics - check out her Kodak Gallery Album http://tinyurl.com/68atg74

One thing Mr T has done...is give the local watchers and rfalconcam some winter excitement. We've all enjoyed watching them, because if he wasn't here, we may not have seen Beauty so active. Another thing to keep in mind is don't underestimate this tiercel. The UB falcons had a pair (BB and Smoky) that raised a successful clutch. The second season, in came young "Yankee" from Niagara Falls and took over as BB's mate. We are going to see more and more rotation of pairs as the population increases. Like everyone, I want to see Archer return and look forward to seeing him as a second season father. I doubt he will stare at the hatched eggs this year.

From GeneseeBirds-L Digest, Vol 90, Issue 28:
1-19-11 - McKay Tower, U.B. South Campus - 1 Peregrine on nest box branch at ~5pm.
1-16-11 - LaSalle Park -1 Peregrine calling while hovering & swooping around chimney top of water treatment plant - nothing else around.
(LaSalle Park is on the Buffalo Harbor where Lake Erie enters the Niagara River. Plant is at Porter Ave & Amvets Dr. This could have been a Statler falcon.)

I have said this before (sorry) but a few years ago, we did have reports of falcons off of South Ave and around MCC. I have to wonder if we have a nesting pair -- or if this is our nesting pair that just becomes more visible in winter
I remember that Jeanne. Carol also posed the same question, and I am wondering about that possibility too. Or, stretching it a bit...do we have an unbanded pair that has come south from a northern city like Montreal? Hmmmm...any pairs up in Canada that fit our despcription?

Actually, it was Dana, not me, that went on the last trip to Buffalo with you gals and I believe that MAK saw the Statler Pefa, not BB. But who knows for sure.
I KNEW THAT...(just testing). LOL! Geesh...we've been on so many falcon adventures, I guess you were there in spirit anyway. Oh yeah, I knew it was the Statler Pefa; must have had BB on my mind. Must be the strain on the brain from not seeing any falcons this past weekend.

Would you believe it?! MAK is on her way home from Arkansas by bus and what does she see around 4:15 today...a falcon flying above the Liberty Building (with twin statues) in downtown Buffalo. She says, "Woohoo, my 1st one in 15 days! SWEET!"
Congratulations - that's a first watch report for Buffalo too. That's a lot more than what Kathy O, Lisa, Dana and I found when we went to Buffalo on the last day of the year. We came up empty handed at 4 locations.
Sounds like MAK saw the Statler pefa. Glad to know a falcon's still out and about.

MAK saw a Pileated Woodpecker today. She said no picture because it flew down in the holler. Marcia L says Arkansas is where the Ivory-billed Woodpecker was (supposedly) discovered in 2004. Hmmmm - what did MAK see?
