I was so excited when I read this news!  Mackenzie was my little guy, I spent so much time fretting over him last year and I am just beside myself knowing that he has made it this far!  I will be making a road trip to Burlington in the coming weeks to try and see him!!   He looks so much like Angel now - his mom  wub2

Isn't it wonderful to hear good news about the young ones.  I bet you are doing the happy dance! the_wave
589  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Kakking on: 09-Aug-10, 03:01:05 AM
The available literature on the subject (at least that which is easily accessible via a web search) indicates that both the adult and juvenile vocalization is referred to as a "kak".  I don't think there's any problem with referring to the alarm call of either a juvenile or an adult by the same term, though there are certainly differences in timbre, depth and volume.  See the "Voice" section on this page from the Canadian Peregrine Foundation for an example.

The Communication and Perception section of the Peregrine page on the University of Michigan's Museum of Zoology site also has some useful information that points toward both perceptions of a "kak" and an "ack" being basically the same vocalization since there is a great deal of individuality in these calls.  It makes for interesting reading.

Thanks Jim for posting these links.  I've never seen the one from MI.  Good resource!

Thanks Kris for posting this news.  I haven't been following the forums as diligently lately due to work overload.  I feel terrible especially after being able to visit Seneca, Cheyenne and Warrior in person.  I too had that feeling when the adults resumed their normal behavior.

Very interesting...a stand alone nestbox.  It reminds me of an Osprey nestsite with a box insted of sticks.  I was thinking of comments Mark Nash made when we were discussing the nestbox on the roof of the Lennox Power Plant that Quest took no interest in.

Mark said CPF hasn't had any success in attracting peregrines to a nestbox on top of a roof.  BUT, hang the nest box down several feet from the roof (on the wall) and they (the urban produced birds) will accept it like a magnet.  Instinctually they prefer a ledge and/or a wall behind them.

I hope the Aussie peregrines don't reject the nestbox since it is so exposed.

Doug and Sheila Carrick, the Hornby Eagle Group, and friends are shocked and saddened to report the sudden death of our beloved Phoenix at 7:19 nest time, Wednesday, July 14.

A rescue effort was under way, but Phoenix collapsed and had difficulty breathing. She died from unknown causes, at an age (76 days) where this is very rarely seen.

Her body was removed from the nest shortly after 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 15.  She was taken to Vancouver Island MARS wildlife rehabilitation centre.

This morning July 17th, we received the preliminary findings from the necropsy performed on Phoenix. Phoenix was a female. She died from acute bilateral mycotic pneumonia.  Other tests results will become available over the next week, and will confirm the causative agent. Because Phoenix's death was caused by an infectious disease, sadly, she cannot be returned to Hornby Island for interment.

We owe a debt of gratitude to Maj Birch (Mountainaire Avian Rescue), Dr. Schwantje (wildlife veterinarian, British Columbia Ministry of Environment) and Dr. Bowes (avian pathologist for the British Columbia Animal Health Laboratory) for their dedication and determination to learn as much from Phoenix as they could.

A.J.L.,
on behalf of Doug Carrick and the Hornby Eagle Group.

Terms:
Acute: rapid onset
Bilateral: both lungs
Mycotic: fungal
Pneumonia: inflammatory lung condition

We ask that you remember her by supporting the work of the Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society (MARS) (http://wingbeats.info/), who moved heaven and earth to get help to her.

We love you Phoenix and we mourn with Mom and Dad Hornby.

Jeanne - I was going to compile all of the watch reports with photo links from this thread and put them into one post.  Are you doing Twitter under Falcon Watches?

Welcome sno_leopard!  That's my favorite wildcat.  Thank you for posting Kate St. John's information on the Pittsburgh area falcons.  Wonderful compilation, and very helpful.
