C is facing the watchers..the brick building is where they park...can you see their cars? That red building is the old Aqueduct building now called Thompson-Reuters building. Unfortunately, you can't see any of the watchers sitting in their chairs at Falcon Central. The pedistal blocks the view. You might be seeing someone's car parked back on the Broad Street bridge, but most of the time they are parked closer to Times Square where we sit, so we can get to them quick if a carrier box is needed.

Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Offspring / Re: Any word on Zephyr or Diamante?

No news on Zephyr, Diamante, or Susan B. We know Zephyr made it through his first year, but haven't heard anything since then. He had a yellow band. This year there was a falcon seen with a yellow band in Buffalo, but no identification was made as to whether it was a male or female.

I always get confused with branching, ledging, etc. I consider branching when they leave the nestbox area. So I agree that they are branching right now along the wall and up to the roof of the nestbox.
I never know when it is time to stop calling them eyases either. I aways think of eyases as white fluff balls, fledglings after they've flown off the nesting area, and Juvies when they are are flying well before they leave the territory. So what are they called now when most of their dark feathers are in, but haven't flown yet? I've started calling them youngsters, because they aren't babies/eyases anymore.

Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Falconwatcher Dan has New Title

After Dan heard that Valiant (aka Sabrina) was in Ogdensburg, we thought maybe he took off to visit the eyas he named, since we haven't see him around falconwatching. Brian H gave Dan a call and Brian relayed the following...
Dan comes down to watch the falcons early in the morning around between 5:30-7:30. He tries to come down at other times whenever he gets a chance, but he's missed seeing the watchers. Some employees from Bausch and Lomb have seen Dan sitting on the bridge in the mornings. They finally walked down and asked Dan what he was doing there. Once he explained about the falcons, they understood because they watch from their building. So, they have nicked named Dan "The Mayor of Broad Street Bridge."

We keep seeing a falcon flying really high overhead at Etobicoke and I notice last week that Quest was in the area again. We figure it's a 'she' as she very high up and still is identifiable to us as a falcon. She flies at a high enough altitude that our pair don't feel threatened by her and know she is just passing through. I told Frank that I bet it's Quest and today he told me that he thought he saw "quest' again before lunch We want some please!

Another update...
21 June 2010 22:36 Update What a day it has been for all involved. Isn’t this bird amazing, she has now fed herself and the chicks 4 times now this evening. This is good news and yes there is a but, but she still is not 100%. Let's hope our male can get some fish into the nest early tomorrow morning so she can feed again soon. Fiona and I will be here through the night to keep an eye on her. We will keep the blog updated as usual, which reminds me to thank the guys at Red Paint for getting the blog up and running again. They do a great job for us. Peter

Jemison likes to pancake at the very edge of the platform. When I first saw this, I thought she had disappeared over the edge. Paul Paul, We are all having heart palpitations here too. Jeanne panicked yesterday evening while watching the cam. She thought for sure one went over. She contacted a couple people including me. I was already out and about when she called. We both met downtown, and by the time we got there, Carol P and Shaky confirmed by phone that both youngsters were in the box. So, we watched some nice flying by the parents before the sun set. This new location has us on edge, because we were so used to the playpen. I'm sure these two will do just fine. They seem to be progressing according to schedule.

Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Offspring / Re: Seneca Sighted at Brookpark Road Bridge with a Mate!

I hope someone can band her! Here is a response I got from Chad & Chris posted to CNMH:Joyce-- and in answer to your questions, DOW checked out this nest several times to see if they could band, but in the long run they decided not to. First, they couldn't get the snooper truck to go in from on top of the bridge, and they couldn't block off Underpass Road with a truck because it's one of the only access roads into NASA with current construction that they are doing on another road. They decided not to try repelling down, because it would require swinging in to the nest because of the cubby "roof". We certainly can appreciate the legacy of Mariah and Kaver and understand that it would be special to be able to keep track of Seneca's first youngster. Now that Warrior is at 4 weeks of age and pretty mobile, the only way that they would band is if she ends up down after fledging and we have to get her, so we'll have to wait and see.Avian bonding?...

I don't believe the Department of Wildlife will band the chick. According to Chad & Chris, they said they couldn't can't get a bucket in order to band "Warrior Princess". No equipment was available. Others have been asking about banding as well. I posted a couple of comments to to Chris & Chad on CMNH. I asked if there is any possibility of someone repelling down from the bridge and if it would help if we put in a plea from Rochester? Check to see if C+C respond on the CMNH forum. ~Joyce

This is an amazing comparison. I don't think I have seen any other falcon pairs this close in size. On June 13 Chad + Chris wrote..."In the 12th shot, as we had thought since we first observed Cheyenne (and as Joyce has mentioned) Cheyenne appears to be a large male. With the wings in synch you can see that their wing span is very similar (and Seneca, as the bottom bird, is actually a touch closer in this sequence)." Check out their entire sequence of food exchange photos on CMNH.
