661  Anything Else / Totally OT / Re: The Spirit of Skye (Geocaching) on: 17-May-10, 08:10:10 PM

That was so nice of that geocacher to bring Skye home!   clap

Yesterday a group of watchers went on a geocache hunt to find the resting place for the Travel Bug Skye.  Susan C, Shaky, Carrie, Jeanne, Kathy O, Carol P, Brian and me (& doggies) met at Greece Canal Park.  Susan and Shaky had their GPS and we followed the hits posted on the website to find the cache in the woods. When we reached the coordinates, Susan C said go find it.  We all spread out to look, and Carol P found it.

To see Susan's face as she opened the cache was worth it!  The Spirit of Skye has been traveling for over 3 years.  It was in great condition, and still kakked!  The couple who brought her home left a message with Skye.  It was heartwarming.  Rarely do these travel bugs ever come back home. Carol P took some pics and when she gets a chance will share them.

Watchers were out on Saturday afternoon checking for the peregrine Brian, Dan, Jeanne, Carol P, Dawn, Susan C, Larry O and me.  No sighting, but we had a good raptor watch - we saw one of the Irondequoit Eagles and a juvenile.  The female came in with a fish and flew around the tops of the trees where the nest is.  This was a first for Jeanne!

On Sunday, Dawn was given a boat ride on the Bay and checked the bridge.  She tried looking everywhere with the binocs. Nothing...and she agrees that there isn't a good spot under there for a nest.  She also looked at some of the cliffsides and didn't see anything.

We may have had single peregrine wandering by for a couple of days, and then off to a different location.  We'll continue to look for other peregrine locations.

When I sign into twitter on the livestream page and type a comment, it doesn't pose.  It just says I cannot post for several more seconds.  I don't know what I am doing wrong.  It sometimes will let me post at work but only once every so often

Jeanne - you are limited in the # of characters you can type.  Are you typing in too much?

Me too Kris G. - I went for the 18th way back when.  Enough of this fidgeting...Let's see pipping!  I sure hope they aren't waiting for Carol P's birthday! Wink

On my way to work, I heard WHAM (Buffalo) talk radio mention the UB peregrines during the news and Tom Baurle also mentioned them on his talk show.

Apparently people are getting so interested in watching the eyases on the webcam (which is linked on the radio's website) that people are calling into WHAM for answers about what is happening.  WHAM called the SPCA for answers to questions they are receiving.  WHAM announced on the radio that people should not worry about seeing the eyases left alone for periods at a time, because the parents are out hunting for food, and that this is normal.

BB and Yankee are getting in trouble, attacking workers across the street at the VA Hospital, even knocking the hard hat off one guy![/b]

I guess a peregrine's view of close is very different from ours.  That's a fiesty pair.  if they are not careful, they might get expelled from school!

I watched a feeding earlier this evening. As expected, the biggest eyas got the most.  I felt bad for the smallest one who was in the middle. Maybe this little one got some food when I wasn't tuned in.  When he huddled with the one close to him, instead of facing out for food, BB poked him once.

I was looking at CMNH forum and just saw pics from the banding of the Terminal Tower eyases in Cleveland.  For the females, the numbers posted were 58/H and 59/H  They are using black over red.  In the pic below you can see the USFW band is purple.

So maybe the Niagara Falls Peregrine is from OHIO.  (I love trying to solve falcon mysterys paperbag ...just call me Sherlock Cheesy)

Oh Boy, FOUR EGGS getting ready to hatch.  I thought it was cute...Seneca jumping the gun and bringing food to the eggs.  Maybe she was thinking, "Just in case they hatch while I am gone, I'll bring food back to the nest first before I cache it away."

We might have parallel hatching - Auntie Seneca in Ohio and her nephew Archer in Rochester.

Seneca's white spot over the cere is parted in the middle by some dark feathers...

Dan and Brian were out at Irondequoit Bay yesterday, but no sighting of a falcon.  More of us will be out this weekend.  Keep your talons crossed!

Looks like the female is a first-year peregrine based on the color and striping.  Because of the purplish USFW band, it is likely a midwest falcon, just like BB at UB.  I know that MN and MI use those colored USFW bands, but I don't know where else they are used.  Attached are the 2009 female falcons with black/red with H on the red.  Many to chose from!  Because of the female's age, maybe they are not nesting.

671  Support / Help! / How do we post a video clip (not rfalconcam)? on: 13-May-10, 12:34:45 PM
I saw that Sage posted a mini clip under Re: ~Buffalo Falcon News 2010~
« Reply #117 on: 12-May-10, 11:59:52 PM ».  How is that done?

Rather than inserting a URL or hyperlink, How do we post a video clip so it shows like a photo?

Here is a map link that Dawn sent me last night.  One place that Brian & KathyO mentioned is Newport Rd.

Last night I was scrolling around the Bay with the map trying to get familiar with the area.  We plan on exploring various locations this weekend.  Lou mentioned that he and Dana often go winter birding where the old Glen Edith used to be on the opposite side of the Bay from Newport.

The place that most of us watch the eagles from is at the southend near Basils Restaurant on Empire.  There is a Parking Area between Bayside Boat & Tackle and Basils.  You can clearly see it on the Satellite Map.

P.S. NUNDA is pronounced in the typical unique Rochester locale way...NUN DAY.

John Carlos - You can get in touch directly with Linda who monitors the Toronto Sheraton Falcons.  She is "windatmyback" on our forum, and you can click on the email icon and possiboly meet up with her.

If you are there for any length of time, she could use all the help she can get when the young-uns start to fledge.  They don't have a group like we do in Rochester, and it so difficult with all those buildings.

Chad + Chris confirm THREE eggs in the nest!

I told C+C that I think there are FOUR.  When I changed the zoom level on my screen, I see a tinge of rose farther back with a rounded shape in the still photo (where Cheyenne is off to the right). Then in the last photo I still see a rosy rounded form to the right of Seneca's foot.  I checked out their video that parallels the still shots, and one egg looks farther out than the others.  You can where Seneca's foot is in relation to the egg in the video, and in the still shot that's the tinge of rose I see.

Video: Seneca & Cheyenne Have Three Eggs
Does anyone see what I see?

Check out all the pics at 2010 Brookpark Rd. Bridge on the CMNH forum.

fingers, toes, eyes and everything else crossed.  pray

I know a few of us will be looking on the weekend, and some will try during the week. We're hoping for a repeated sighting, since we are not sure if it is a resident, migrating or wandering falcon like Quest.

Anyone who lives in the Rochester and wants to help ...take a ride to Irondequoit Bay and keep your eyes to the skies!  foxbinocs
