Boy, your bird has the coloring and look of a falcon.  Here are a couple photos of a merlin with the same tail markings.  I think your first guess might be correct.  Perhaps the beak was damaged with the impact.   Based on the weeds in concrete, the size comparison is appropriate for a merlin as well.

Archer says: "That's my feather!" I have a hard time telling which side the feather is from.  Is this off the right wing?  I know it is not a primary, what do you call this feather?  Secondary?

Janet - OMG, I feel terrible I didn't see your message until I checked from work today.  Our company is being inspected by the government, and I put checking the forum on the back burner (even on the weekend).

The only places I am familiar with where you could see water are Shanghai Red's near the small boat harbor at opening of lake, Dock of the Bay on lake Erie, and Harry's Harbour Place on the river before you get to the lake.

I don't know where you ended up, but I also would have suggested the Pearl Street Grill in downtown Buffalo, and if you wanted to sample the authentic chicken wings...the local dive and famous Anchor Bar, where they originated.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.

Hi birdmusic!

I wish I had known when you were going to be there.  I could have been wandering around downtown at the same time and missed you.  By the time I got to the bridge, it was 4:35, and I saw one falcon flying at 4:40 and took off after it.  The rest of the time, falcon watchers were up at Kodak Park.  I returned to the bridge about 7:00, and still didn't see anything then either.

Sorry your "falcon" watch wasn't more memorable.  Sure glad you got to see the "spots".

951  Rochester Falcons / Falcon Watches / Falcon Watch - Sunday 8/9 after the rain on: 10-Aug-09, 01:15:18 PM
Sunday 8/9 after the rain, I (+ Casey) checked downtown.  Went all over and saw no falcons.  Went to the bridge to check the gorge wall and while I had my binoculars to my face, I caught this flapping bird coming towards me.  I had no camera in hand, so I keep watching with the binocs.  It flew overhead and I could see the peregrine markings on the face.  It headed NE past the brewery.

I got in my car, went up St Paul, and stopped near Hart street (where a nestbox is located).  No falcons, but a nice red-tail soaring.  Maybe the falcon was going after the red-tail.

Picked Up Dawn & Bullet and went to Kodak Park.  Ran into Carol P and Dana.  Carol just got through taking some pics of a red-tail in a tree.  She hadn't seen any falcons downtown earlier in the day, and nothing at KP.  Dan showed up and we checked out the back side of Kodak.  No Mariah, no juvie.

I posted three times in the "Icanhazcheezeburgur" and THOUGHT i hit the EDIT button but obviously hit the "remove" button.  I didn't mean to do that.

laugh Three times?  I don't mean to laugh, but there is nothing worse than typing a message and losing it.  I've been there too.  I can't tell you how many times I've written a watch report and then hit the back button and lost it.

FOLLOW UP:  I went back to check that the modify button is working and not deleting.  If you get this, it's works.

I remember someone posting David Attenborough's video on the Lyrebird on Kfalconcam.  I love the way this one imitates that common jungle sound we hear in movies.

The Lyrebird is so fascinating to listen to, especially when they mimic other sounds like camera shutters, buzz saws, etc.   I watched the first time, but the second time I only listed with my headphones. I could hear some tapping, and something that sounded like paper rustling.

What do you hear?

Paul, that was great!   the_wave

What a beautiful pair of peregrines.  I loved it when the falcon did his thing and then turned around as if to respond in laughter.  It made me laugh too.

I can never just watch one of your videos.  I took a trip down memory lane an watched some of the juvies flying.  Like Dawn said, we really went through juvie withdrawal this year.

Thanks again - hope you have more to share.

Hi there Florida Paula!  I won't be around for the noon lunchtime falcon watch since I work in Buffalo, but I might make it home in time for an evening watch.  If I'm there, I'll have one of these heavy cameras and Casey by my side.

Joyce,

Funny you should ask. I had a pic of Baron that I never shared and he's wearing his cool red flying shades.

Also, Kathy O and I walked out onto the pedestrian bridge that Jim wrote about.  It gave us a wonderful view of the river below and the building that Mariah was seen on.  It's a gorgeous area filled with life.

Brian and I did the same...and spotted a crow on the Kodak Park building.  There were a few boats going by in the gorge too.  It's a nice way to check both directions to see if anything is flying high around the apartment building too.

Boy these trips north are putting a dent in my gas tank.
