I have been frustrated and saddened this breeding year...no falcon babies in either Rochester or Syracuse. So, I focused on my crows, and in particular, my crow family. We had three babies this year, and I was so excited! Unfortunately the smallest was plucked from the nest. Our beautiful alpha (the biggest) had a run-in with a redtail, and not much was left.
A couple of weeks ago we lost our old guy, the breeding male. I spent hours searching for his body so we could determine cause of death, but no luck.
Yesterday I could not locate my remaining baby crow, but I have not been able to find a body either. I looked again this morning and still no sign of him. Probably a redtail again, but who knows.

Oh, that's great!!! I've been thinking that we should have a "no fledge watch" gathering in the little park Saturday late morning or noonish!! I thought I'd bring some snack or whatever to share, and maybe a falcon will make an appearance!! Need to talk to MAK about that:-)
So glad you will still make the trip Ei! Suzanne in Ithaca

Well, actually we didn't see any "ducks" around, so most likely she flew off with a Red Knot or a Dunlin. Many shorebirds had just flown in from their migration north. They were exhausted, hungry, and probably easy prey for a swift Peregrine.

Don and I just returned from our annual pilgrimage to Cape May/Pine Barrens. Seeing the Red Knots is always a treat and when we pulled into the area, we saw huge clouds of Red Knots, gulls and various shorebirds suddenly fly up. When we got to the viewing platform someone mentioned a Peregrine had grabbed a duck. The Peregrine had flown over the mass of shorebirds several times, causing all to flee, except for this one. We looked at the Peregrine in the scope and could see her standing in the sand with her prize lunch. It reminded me of Quest on Cape Cod/Nantucket. The Peregrine flew off with her food. We tried to follow, but could not relocate her. Suzanne

Yesterday Don and I went to Syracuse to watch Groucho and Fancy. We could see Fancy sitting on the edge of the nest box. We didn't get to see Groucho, but last weekend we saw both fly around. Groucho brought in what looked to be a pigeon, which he shared with Fancy.
