Seems hard to believe, but I just saw that the Harrisburg Peregrines have their first egg!
This was posted on the site:
3/11/2011 :: First Egg! This morning at 9:30 an egg was observed in the scrape. The new female was eight days earlier, on average than her predecessor, 4/4 in delivering the first egg of the season. The first and second egg should get only occasional incubation time. When the third egg arrives incubation time should increase. The full clutch will be warmed continuously until hatching begins. From all indications, this female is very young. As such, it will be difficult to say with any certainty that this year will be as productive as past nesting seasons but it will certainly be interesting to watch and find out.

Hi Joyce and Carol...between work and all the snow we've had this winter, we have not been to Rochester! A couple of weeks ago we drove around for about 4 1/2 hours in white-out conditions just trying to get to Montezuma to check the mudlock eagles. We never made it to Montezuma and were thankful we were not one of the many cars we saw upside down off the road!
BTW, the mudlock eagles are sitting on eggs!!!! YEAH! Suzanne

Don and I were in Syracuse Saturday and looked for the Syracuse Peregrines. We found Fancy right away on top of a building downtown, but she flew off when we blinked! We drove around and found her again on a building at the corner of Washington and Warren. She kept looking around and preening, and then Groucho flew into sight. He was stirring up the local pigeons. He flew behind the buildings and then soared so high we lost sight of him. We watched Fancy for a while, hoping Groucho would return, but we didn't see him.
On our way out of town on Route 690 a peregrine flew over the car! When I looked backed I saw what I think was Groucho heading for the buildings in the downtown area, maybe to rejoin Fancy.

This past Saturday Don and I went to Montezuma sure we would find Rumba and get some pics of him. We arrived about 9:30 and saw a juvenile peregrine sitting on a mudflat in the new shorebird habitat on the wildlife drive. We were so excited! We drove closer, thinking it had to be Rumba, but noticed there were no leg bands on the bird. She took off after being spooked by a van and did not return. We decided it was a female because she was fairly large, too large to be a male. This is the tiny url with the pics Don took of her. Notice she kept an eye on us the whole time. http://tinyurl.com/2al6k7jWe returned to the shorebird habitat later in the day and spent several hours looking for Rumba and the female juvenile. We did not see either one, but did see an adult peregrine at Benning Marsh! I spotted something in a tree near Benning and just as I put my binos up to take a closer look, I noticed the falcon fly out. She flew over the main pool and up, then came down in an awesome stoop on the teals and other waterfowl drifting in the water. She then flew off to the river and we lost sight of her. Again, we decided it was a female as it was pretty good size and I had great looks when she flew over the car. Suzanne

We went back up to Montezuma yesterday and when we arrived we saw a Peregrine in a snag. Similar to yesterday, but different spot. It was convenient that there was an Osprey there to give us a size reference. This one was definitely a male juvie and much lighter in color. While Don set up the camera, he flew off to stoop the shorebirds. We waited a long time, but he did not return.
We decided to stop at May's Pool to check for the Ibis and Little Blue Heron. As we were walking out to the platform I looked to the left and saw a Peregrine swoop in and harass the Grebes and shorebirds...Yeah, another Peregrine. This one looked like one of the Peregrines we saw on Saturday, definitely a female juvie and dark. She flew around a couple of times, but everyone else was looking at the Ibis who was in full view at the time.
Now I had two Peregrines and still no id pics. We spent a lot of time driving around the area looking for Peregrines but didn't have anymore sitings. We finally left the area about 5:30...but we'll be back up next weekend for a meeting at the Refuge. Suzanne
