[Delaney]

Descriptions:

Delaney is an Irish name and means an angel from heaven.

Denali means Great One in Indian (Sanskrit).  It is also the name of the national park surrounding Mt. McKinley in Alaska.  Peregrines are fast and fierce hunters and defenders of their territory, yet are capable of using their sharp beaks and talons to gently turn eggs and move among eyases without harming them.  Pair bonding at the beginning and end of each season insures the continued existence of this great predator.

Earhardt is in honor of the aviatrix. Flying free!

Genesee is for the river and valley over which (s)he will first soar.  Also, the Times Square Building was once the home of the Genesee Trust Company. The  Genesee River flows through the heart of Rochester. Flowing northward from PA through New York, it is a tributary of Lake Ontario. It was seen in the early days to be a hydropower bonanza, providing original power to the 19th century mills and still provides hydroelectric power for downtown Rochester.  The Genesee is also known for its beautiful and powerful waterfalls. High Falls is a famous part of the Genesee and is where many young Falcons have trained to fly before leaving Rochester.

Iroquois pays homage to the Confederation of Indian tribes that once populated New York State. Names of various individual tribes have been used in the past but never the name Iroquois to represent the entire nation!

Razon is Spanish for reason, need, cause, purpose. All of these apply to the protection of our local falcon population.

Shea is an Irish surname transferred to unisex forename use, from an Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Séaghdha ("descendant of Séaghdha"), possibly meaning "hawk-like."

Sorcha is an old Irish name means "shining bright ". Pronounced Sor-va.

Spirit is free from commotion and disturbance; calm, peaceful and quiet. It's also from the Spirit of St. Louis, Charles Lindbergh's plane for the first solo crossing of the Atlantic.

Taurus because the falcon was born in the sign of Taurus.                                                                  

Thunder is for a thunder storm.

Descriptions:

Andromeda in Greek mythology is a princess renowned for her beauty and rescued from a sea monster by Perseus.

Artemis is the Goddess of light and a Huntress. She is independent, beautiful and wild. She teaches leadership and focus. Artemis blesses you with strength, courage and help reaching goals.

Diana is a mythical goddess of the hunt.

Hope as in hope for the future of Peregrine falcons and all endangered or protected species.

Merriam for Florence Merriam, one of the first widely-known female ornithologists in American history. She was a pioneer in the field as she began studying bird behavior as opposed to physical appearance. Also a founding member of the Audubon society in DC.

Moira is from Greek Mythology. She was one of the Greek goddesses of destiny.

Reina is Spanish for "Queen." The Peregrine is the Queen of the Skies.

Sophie is in honor of Glenn Stewart's falcon, Sophie.  She was a fantastic educator bird.  Glenn and Sophie appeared to have a special bond.

Taka means tall, honorable, a falcon!

Zosime is Greek meaning "likely to survive; survivor."

[Aeolus]

Descriptions:

Aeolus is the god of wind.

Audubon is for John James Audubon, American ornithologist and naturalist.

Excalibur was the name of King Arthur's sword.  Some legend versions indicate it had magical powers.  Certainly it was swift and effective.  It is a good symbol suggestive of the extremely fast (and deadly) swoop of a hunting male falcon.
 
Frederick is in honor of Frederick Douglass, a former slave who fought tirelessly for the abolition of slavery in the U.S. Mr. Douglass lived in Rochester for several years and is buried there.  His office, where he published many abolitionist newspapers, was in the Tallman Building on Main Street near the corner of Exchange Street, right around the corner from what is now the site of the Times Square Building, home to our Rochester falcons.
 
Horus is the Egyptian god of war who has the head of a falcon.  He is a fierce god.

Nathaniel is for Nathaniel Rochester.

Nimbus is a type of cloud.

Odyssey is a journey. Falcons often travel great distances, many migrate each year. An Odyssey is about life as a journey, adventure, exploration, and also about returning home at all costs.

Shamal is a summer northwesterly wind in the Persian Gulf area.

Soar is to honor the falcon's flying ability.
