The eyas will be given either an appropriate gender-specific name or a gender-neutral name, whichever receives the most votes. In case of a tie, the number of times each of the 2 names was submitted will be used as a tie breaker. If that is a tie too, a coin will be flipped.

Descriptions:
In French, "cadeau" means "gift." The name acknowledges Dot.ca's Canadian heritage, as well as the fact that we didn't know if Dot.ca would ever stop being aggressive toward Beauty (never mind them actually being a "couple.") This little eyas truly is a gift - against all odds...to Rochester and to falcons everywhere.
Miracle - What started out as a normal breeding season quicklyl changed with B's injury, then Archer's [disappearance] and Unity's death. That DC and B were able to conquer the elements as well as their past and not only look toward the future but produce a namesake is a Miracle.
The phoenix (phenix) has long been presented as a symbol of rebirth, immortality, and renewal. The phoenix is reborn from its ashes. This eyas was born from the ashes of our (Rochester's) last nesting attempts. First Beauty's last year and Unity's this year and possibly Pigotts too for all we know.
Solstice - Since the egg hatched on the Summer Solstice – it’s an appropriate name. related to the natural cycle of life and earth and nature.
Triumph - Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines "triumph" as "the joy or exultation of victory or success "....I think that perfectly describes the feeling at the hatching of the eyas in Rochester this year, after the tragedies that have occurred over the past 2 years.

Descriptions:
Artemis, the hunter. In Greek mythology, Artemis is the goddess of the hunt and of wild animals, among other things.
Faith means to have trust and confidence- that things would work out between DotCa and Beauty, which resulted in this beautiful eyas!
The meaning of Nyla means cloud and champion. Because she will spend so much time in the air, I thought cloud was appropriate. The fact that the second part of the meaning is champion adds to the wonder of this name. A champion means one that is clearly superior or has the attributes of a winner! This name encompasses the whole idea of what we look for in a peregrine falcon
Summer - Egg hatched on first day of summer.
Vega is the sky's fifth brightest star and the meaning in Arabic is "The Swooping Eagle." This star is in the constellation Lyra, the Lyre, which represents the harp of the great mythical musician Orpheus

Aeolus, in Greek mythology, is the god, or the keeper, of the winds. In the Odyssey, Aeolus gave Odysseus a bag with the winds enclosed inside.
Freyr is one of the most important gods of Norse paganism. Freyr was associated with sacral kingship, virility and prosperity, with sunshine and fair weather. Freyr "bestows peace and pleasure on mortals"
The name Maverick means Dissenter, or someone who protests, or goes against the norm. This year in particular has seen its dissenting from multiple peregrines. Ranchers who refused to brand their cattle were known as mavericks.
Orion is the constellation of "The Hunter" who watches over Rochester's winter skies and is one of the most recognizable constellations.
Navashen is Indian - one who brings hope.

I really hope they get this baby banded soon. Losing track of her, after all the love we have for her, would be like losing track of Quest.
Time is ticking away! Yeah let's git er done already!  Our baby needs a name and bands! Whatever happened to voting on names? Is there a chance that banding won't happen? Beginning to wonder..... Voting will be coming this morning. The committee finally narrowed down the names yesterday. I couldn't post the poll last night because I didn't have Internet where I spent the night. |
