For parafalconing, you have to substitute the paraglider with one of these.

Communication resumed at 6 AM. At this point we don't know the cause of the outage or why it came back.

The cameras are back, and so are the falcons.

Lost network communication with Times Square building. No video or still pictures are coming from the building.

I changed the poll to on/off.
4117  Resources / Polls / Earth Hour and egg laying on: 05-Mar-12, 10:03:58 AM
Earth Hour will take place at 8:30 PM on March 31 this year. Many people will observe Earth Hour by turning off their lights and other electrical devices.

WWF - Earth Hour 2012 - March 31, 2012 8:30pm

Last year Rfalconcam turned off its cameras for one hour. However, Earth Hour was on March 26, five days earlier than this year's observance and well before we expected our resident falcon to lay an egg. There was little chance of missing the "event" while the cameras were off.

The same cannot be said about this year with Earth Hour falling on March 31. This is much closer to the time when an egg might be laid.

So here's a question for all of you. If it looks like an egg might be laid during Earth Hour, do we leave the cameras on, or do we shut them off?

Where is third NB?  Can you disclose?

There is a nest box on the roof of the Hawkeye plant.

Ei has just updated the falcon family trees. You can view them on the Family Tree page.

http://rfalconcam.com/rfc-main/familyTree.php

As an added bonus, there is now a mobile app for the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Android that lets you interactively explore the large and intertwined family tree of the Rochester falcons. Want to know the names of Archer's siblings? Want to know Unity's band number? Want to know the name of a falcon associated with a particular band?  This app can give you the answers to these questions and more -- a "must" for any falcon watcher. Best of all, it's free!

Download to iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/myheritage/id477971748?ls=1&mt=8

Download to Android:
https://market.android.com/details?id=air.com.myheritage.mobile

Once it is downloaded and installed, run it and log in using a special guest ID set up by Ei.

Cam 1 not going for a cruise tonight?

With the amount of activity at the nest box increasing, it makes sense to leave the camera pointed at it full-time.

What's this?  No duck tape?
Clear packing tape. Duck tape doesn't hold up well to Rochester weather.

This piece of tape needed to be longer to wrap over the side of the camera housing. It will probably come off soon. No big deal. It's only keeping the camera wires neat. We'll apply a longer piece on banding day. (knock on wood)

Not much duck tape will actually stand up to in the long run, let alone a windy perch in the winter.  Its reputation exceeds it.

It works well on keeping my tux together.

An ad for duck tape-the picture in my head:  Shaky in his duck-taped tux standing on the wall around the nest box yelling "I'm King of the World"!  penguinspin

I'm not standing on that wall! Standing on the platform is as close as I get.

I love the expressions on this one.
