Main Cam Wandering

We're doing a little experiment to see when the Main Cam freezes. It's hard to tell when pointed at an empty nest box, but it's easy to spot when pointed at a bridge with moving traffic.

Survival of the fittest. Eat what is there, or you're history.

You are what you eat - I haven't sprouted hooves or feathers yet, but I do have a nice set of ....
CLAWS!

Indeed, although not literally. This, however, pertains more to the type of picky eater whose diet consists mostly of fat and sugar, i.e. junk food.

Good eating habits greatly contribute to good health and a longer lifespan -- two crucial factors in ensuring the passing of your genes.

In simplistic terms, if you eat junk, you end up with expensive health problems and a premature death. If you eat a balanced diet, you live longer and have more time and money to spend on raising your kids and grandkids.

Survival of the fittest.

Some what ifs....Would this extra use wear it out faster?  What if You wanted to check something special and someone else had that time slot?  As sometimes happens, what if it got "stuck" during the payees time slot?

The system could be configured to limit use to a reasonable amount.

A refund would be issued if the time slot became unavailable.

The sticking issue would be fixed before reservations are accepted. This probably would have already been in place if we hadn't run into problems with the camera this season.

I like Darwin's view of picky eaters.

I wonder what dog and horse breeders use.

A lot of Cat Breeders use one called Breedmate.

The cat breeders in my neighborhood use the bushes beneath my bedroom window.

As many of you know, Camera 1 can be panned left and right, tilted up and down (mostly down), and zoomed in and out. One of the things we may do next year is to let online falcon watchers control the camera.  People would be able to reserve a block of time at the controls in exchange for a small donation.

To make it fair to everyone, we would charge by the minute and set a cap on the number of minutes so everyone who wanted a a turn at the controls could have one.

What do you as potential users think about this? Would you use it? What do you think is a fair price?

And one funny thing to add...every time I add an eyas I get a pop-up...this child's mother is only 4 years old!  Are you sure?   baby

I wonder what dog and horse breeders use.

5550  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / We need a new family tree page on: 12-Aug-10, 04:30:07 PM
Our Rochester falcon family tree page is out of date.

http://rfalconcam.com/rfc-main/familyTree.php

We need to update it. There are several ways we can go here:

  • Add Archer's lineage to the right side of the page
  • Create a 2nd page for A&B separate from the M&K/C-S page
  • Create a linked set of pages. Click on links on each page to follow the tree and display information for each falcon.

Each option has its own pluses and minuses. The first option would be the easiest to do, but over time it would get very busy and hard to read. The second would be a bit harder to set up than the first, but easier to read and maintain. The third would be the most difficult to set up, but would be easy to update, easy to follow, and it could potentially contain more information than a simple chart. Ei mentioned working on something similar in this post from April.

It appears to be a standalone application that runs on a PC. It's not very useful from someone who doesn't own a copy of the program. However, if it could output a linked set of pages that we could upload to our site, that would be great.

Another option would be to use a web-based application, either through a web site like ancestry.com or by installing it and running it on our site. There may be some costs involved, and we'd have to decide if they are worth it and then how to pay for them.

At this point, I'd be willing to accept anything that filled in the gaping hole in our falcon family tree as long as it looked professional and could be easily viewed by visitors to our site.

Discussion? Volunteers? Hired guns?
