46  Other Nature Related Information / Falcon Web Cams / Re: No Live on: 01-Mar-10, 08:31:52 PM
I was very sad to learn there would be no live streaming or refreshing images this year from DeMortel due to what looks like "politics" between all the involved groups  crying It was there that I went after our Kodak Box was taken down. I grew to love those two so its with deep sadness I now know from reading back on all the posts there that this year we will miss S2 and PA. They have however been posting updated videos so we can catch small snippets of the pair. Now to hope our Peregrines in Rochester will pick a nestbox this year.

Here from BCAW member Alphons  S2 and PA in Flight together

From DEF of BCAW.. Ingrid will post all vids on the foundations new site so we can see a little of S2 and PA through this year

Hubby and I are overwhelmed with gratitude for the beautiful sentiments expressed here for our little feathered baby and we are truly Blessed to have such caring cyber friends.

Tonight we buried Ozzie  crying in my friends lovely backyard. She shares a place with 2 Guinea pigs and a rabbit. We placed her in a box inside her happy hut. We added her favorite ring swing pictured here below (with the shells and different colors) and a handful of Popsicle sticks which were her favorite toy to shred. I used to buy a craft case of them for her to go through. It was better then her working on my woodwork lol  She was a stinker and so filled with personality. Before I knew she was a she, (she laid eggs one year)I always said Ozzie had the personality of a little Jimmy Cagney. The way she would proudly strut across the floor with her Popsicle sticks just daring little Whitey to take it, which sometimes he did.

She wasn' t afraid of anything! as I learned one day when I accidently placed my huge Eclectus in the birdsroom before placing Ozzie back in her cage. She zeroed in on this familiar but unsuspecting intruder 10X her size and I came running as I heard a loud screeeech!!! Shocked only to find this tiny lovebird clinging to the back of poor Baley's neck ready to fight for her territory against this huge monster bird!! Baley was none the worse and without a scratch. But Ozzie made her point. She definately was the alpha bird in our home.

But even with that you had to love her. She was so spunky and at the same time so tolerant of her friend Whitey the parakeet who stayed by her side for 5 years.

Well that's all I have to say about that as Forrest Gump would say...

That was just our little Ozzie

God Bless you all... my dearest friend said she will let me bury her in her yard where she has a little pet cemetary and I can always visit her. We only have a condo so I was worried where I could put her. Your thoughts and prayers are all so appreciated. We get very attached to our lil fur and feathered babies don't we? They are all family to us... You know I saw she was suffering the last 15 minutes of her life so  I took her off the towel I had her resting on and put her back in her favorite place, her happy hut on the floor of the cage, and prayed God would take her and he did minutes later.

Catie, I am so so sorry. I lost a Cockatiel to the same thing. New Year's Eve 4 years ago. Taco kept falling off his perch and just stayed on the bottom....laying next to the light bulb we put next to his cage. He barely was breathing. It was the God awfulist New Years. Right after midnight, he took his last breath. I feel for you and Ozzie. My prayers are definitely with you. It's not easy with any animal. Sorry.
Ozzie just went to heaven.  crying Hubby and I are just so broken up over her. She wasn't even hand tamed but she was such a character and the last year she let me pet her head and handle her more.. She also loved to bop to music in sync with us bopping. Came to me for kiss kiss and loved her popsicle sticks she'd carry around and shred. Her companion is Whitey our parakeet. He treated her like his mate. He'll be so sad without her. He knows her name so Im sure he'll be calling her now and I'll  crying

2 months ago my little Ozzie, my single female lovebird, started to fall out of her happy hut in the night. We took her right into a board certified avian vet and after blood tests and an xray he said she was very sick with multiple bacteria, fungus and a growth in her abdomen. He gave us antibiotic to give her and an anti fungi but we could see it didn't help her for very long. He didn't give us much hope. We don't know how she got so sick because we are very careful, clean and even give them all bottled water. Her favorite treats are just peas and avi cakes. She could only talk enough to say her name but she twirled on her bong as I clapped and said yeaaaa!  The vet suggested against surgery saying she probably wouldn't survive.
Today shes lying on the bottom of her cage and her eyes are open very little and dying. Ive had her for 7 years and we love her very much. This is so hard to watch but there is nothing we can do but keep  her comfortable and warm. I also tried giving her water with a dropper on the outside of her beak but shes very weak. Just say a prayer that she flys with the others soon we've lost in our avian family. I believe the lion lays with the lamb in heaven so I'm sure they won't hurt her.  I'll miss her so much.  crying Here's her picture.

Cat food recall includes N.J.

Diamond Pet Foods recalled select bags of dry cat food today after 21 reports of health problems in cats.
Select bags of Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat and Premium Edge Hairball could lead to gastrointestinal or neurological problems for cats, because they do not contain enough thiamine, an essential nutrient for cats.
If cats fed these foods have no other source of nutrition, they could develop thiamine deficiency. If untreated, this disorder could result in death.
Initial symptoms of thiamine deficiency include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss. Later, neurological problems could develop including, bending the neck toward the floor, wobbly walking, circling, falling and seizures.
The company has confirmed 21 cases of thiamine deficiency in New York and Pennsylvania.
The recalled bags of food were distributed in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
For a full refund, consumers can return the recalled cat food to the place it was purchased. For more information call 800/977-8797.

SCIENCE NEWS

The koala, Australia's star symbol, is dying of stress.

Koalas live in the rolling hills and flat plains where eucalyptus trees grow, because they need the leaves for both food and water. But as people move in, koalas are finding fewer trees, researchers say. As a result, the stress is bringing out a latent disease that infects 50 to 90 percent of the animals.

"Koalas are in diabolical trouble," says researcher Frank Carrick, who heads the Koala Study Program at the University of Queensland in Australia. "Numbers show that even in their stronghold, koala numbers are declining alarmingly."

The culprit is chlamydiosis, a virus that breaks out in koalas in times of stress -- like cold sores do in humans -- and leads to infections in the eyes and urinary, reproductive and respiratory tracts. It can cause blindness, infertility and death.

Deborah Tabart, chief executive of the Australian Koala Foundation, says the koala needs to be classified as a threatened species, with policies directed at preserving its habitat. The United States already considers the koala a threatened species. The Australian Koala Foundation estimates there are fewer than 100,000 koalas left in Australia, down from the millions at the time European settlement of the continent started in the late 1700s.

Although Carrick thinks the numbers are slightly higher, regional counts by scientists and state governments show a huge drop. There's clear evidence that some local populations have gone extinct because of chlamydial disease, Carrick said. A 2008 survey of the so-called Koala Coast area, where the animal is most abundant, shows the population dropped 64 percent, from more than 6,200 in 1999 to about 2,800. Car accidents and dog attacks killed many koalas, but the report blamed about 60 percent of the deaths on disease.

Keyboard cat honored ....  picture and you tube link to him below

NEW YORK -- A piano-playing cat who became an Internet star will be honored by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at its annual awards luncheon.
The 5-year-old gray tabby was adopted from a shelter in Cherry Hill.
Her owners posted videos of Nora playing the piano on YouTube.
The ASPCA says Nora is a great example of how shelter pets can be the best companions of all.
The ASPCA's Humane Awards Luncheon will take place Oct. 29 at the Pierre Hotel in New York City.
Nora will be named Cat of the Year, and a Labrador retriever named Archie will be named Dog of the Year. Archie is the assistance dog for an injured Iraqi war veteran.

Thats a lot of points I've read exactly about feeding raw Kapi. Its not good for us at all and as a matter of fact even the frozen raw food prepared for cats and dogs suggest you wash your human hands after handling because of e coli. But think of it this way Chocolate is awsome for us but its toxic to dogs and cats..their digestive system just isn't the same as a human. Ideally Organic and free ranging is best but what they throw in 99% of canned food is far worse then any raw food we can buy in the market. Always proceed with any change in diet slowly and well informed. I'd say go with the advice of your vet but many vets are tied into the perscription diet companies so use your head there as well and seek out an diet educated vet. Just be informed. I know what Ive seen. Speaking of Garlic I used it for years. A little powder mixed in with my dogs food year round to keep fleas and ticks away. Worked like a charm on 4 of my dogs over the years and my vet still swore it was heresay. Better then chemicals I say.

We switched to Diamond's "Chicken Soup" dog and cat food a couple of months ago after reading many glowing reviews and endorsements.  Two weeks ago, our 8 year old neutered male tabby, never before sick a day in his life, suffered an acute urinary blockage.  Two catheterizations and multiple IV treatments later, he has just about recovered.  While I can't directly tie his condition to his recent diet, our suspicions have caused us to abandon Diamond products and return to brands we've used without incident over the years.

Feline urinary syndrome (FUS) is sooo common in male neutered cats. Im so sorry your kitty got so ill.  I lost my Siamese kitty to FUS many years ago Sad But then vets didn't have a clue what caused it. Diet is a huge factor.

A handful of cat moms I know that have male cats that suffered from FUS and bladder problems have been giving their kitties a daily cranberry supplement and they haven't had another problem. Even my girlfriend whose dog had bladder problems had great luck. The vet recently told her whatever ya doin keep on doin it. The only thing she changed was giving him the cranberry supplements I told her about.. Once the kitty has healed from the initial infection of course! I think well researched wet food works best for male cats Smiley  Barn cats just don't get these illnesses because their mousers and eat bones and raw meat. ewwww.
I hope your kitty feels alot better though
