16  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Owls at Bethpage State Park on: 17-Mar-11, 10:35:25 PM
Nice article about 2 owl nests in Bethpage:

Quote
Great Horned Owls often commandeer nests from Red-tailed Hawks, which are native to the park trees, and that can sometimes put their young in danger. This year the nocturnal predators made their homes in artificial nests placed by Jones about five years ago in the trees. The habitats are favorable because they offer suitable protection from Red-tailed Hawks as they don’t shed their needles in the winter months.
He tracks where the owls are nesting by observing pellets, regurgitated bone and hair from animals consumed by the owls. He also hears from golfers who see the birds' enormous nests and 5-foot wing spans in the sky.

I have a lot of problems with the view, figuring out which way she's facing, etc.  All I see is a black form moving as she breathes.  Does anyone else have this problem, and does anyone have any hints as to how to view her?  Thanks.

I don't think they have moved the camera...they have added a high definition camera.  The regular camera I think is in the same position.  They just have to put it at a certain angle in order to see the perch.

I've watched this webcam for several years now, and it is the Miraflores webcam that we're talking about.  In the mornings they tend to have the camera face the wrong way, and they switch it around noon.

Was there any shaking observed on the webcams?

DumpsterKitty, I've been watching more closely than you and she did not have 2 successful fledglings recently.  Just days before they were about to fledge, a crow attacked the nest.  About an hour later the owner came home and found Hoku on the ground and returned it to the nest.  Hope was never found.  Then you see with the second photo that Hoku successfully fledged.

Just thought you'd like to know.

I was going to ask you to simplify everything you said, but your 4th bullet point did it perfectly.  If that could be repeated at the start of the banding thread tomorrow as a reminder, for those of us who have problems finding this thread again (like me)!

I see, from the main camera, that the babies have consecrated the new box with their poop art!

There is good news!  Several viewers saw an owl return and they think it was the male.  All of a sudden, around midnight last night, two owls appeared!  So, the female escaped!  Then they mated!  So, things might turn out ok after all.

One website that I have found with a variety of webcams is the one run by Cornell U (which is probably the #1 research facility on ornithology).  Well, some of the things they found in the early days of doing this have been fascinating.  It is briefly documented here, in an article written in 2006:

Well, tragedy struck last night.  The barn owls have had their chicks hatch in the last week, and around midnight a rat snake entered and the babies are no more.  It is questionable as to whether the mama escaped.  The notes written by the viewers is heartbreaking.  As of now, the snake is still in the box, so be careful if you don't want to look:

Their other cameras are working fine, however.

Take a close look at the box everyone!  It will never be this clean ever again!   Smiley

I also have today...which brings up the question, are we looking for a full hatch or just a pip appearing?

My favorite of all birdcams are of hummingbirds.  Presently, the two that I know of both have empty nests.  However, this one has the mom lay 3 or 4 sets of eggs a year, since it is in southern California, so keep checking every couple of days:

This one, however, has been having activity these last few days.  The mom has been showing up and testing the nest and adding material to it, so expect eggs soon (scroll down to see updates on the nest status):

Anyone know of any others?

I had the barn owl web cam on and the female was just sitting there.  Well I went to another window and forgot that I had that cam on, and shortly after 11:30 pm eastern time, I heard a thump.  That's when I realized that I still had that cam on.  When I went to that window, it turned out that the male had shown up, and he proceeded to mate with the female.  So, the countdown to egg laying begins!
