May be something else going on here. Nesting there since 2003-perhaps age is playing a role in the failed hatches and survival of chicks. I'm no expert-just sayin'. Tragic season for them!  Sad
My guess is something environmental, whatever caused the total failure in the first nesting was probably still in her system with the second though starting to wear off.

This is such a tough area to fledge.  Too many tall buildings with mirrored windows.   Sad

Isn't Toronto in the FLAP program? Are they taping their windows?  Have they started?   Sad

No one here is going their windows unless they are embarrassed into it in the media and taken to court like Cadillac Fairview was.

More recently here just last week, in my area where I live they tore down some of the oldest trees in Toronto - while reporters watched nesting birds panicking as their offspring died still in the nests in the trees - all so they can build glass condos that overlook High Park.

This reminds me of when Wild Wings took in the crow that people were keeping as a pet. It would moo and make cat sounds when it first arrived. Unfortunately he is gone now.

I knew they were smart but.....whoa!!!
crows can be taught to talk. When I was a little girl the people up the road from us had a crow that was injured somehow he could no longer fly so they took care of him. (illegal I know now but not then) I remember he would say "Hello" and "Nevermore" I thought that was so cool.

We could take the idiots out back and shoot them - save the cost of 3 hots and a cot.  Yeah, like that will happen!
nah just give them something really gross to do as community service something they will NEVER forget...then if they do it again  Wink

I won't comment on bureaucracy that is out of any of our control...other than to say my experience has always been you push, they dig in their heels even further.

But the youngest is just 22 days today...late tonight if you want to be technical about it. It's a range to account for multiples, not something written in stone.

Yesterday's outing was a stumble. I didn't see today's live, but he was back in with no trouble. They band eyases not in a box all the time.

I guess I'm just trying to say it's not time to panic by any means. Communication would be nice, but see item #1.
Absolutely, Ei.  I just wish I had a bit of faith that the people who do have control of this situation actually know that it's banding time.

While we all care so much for these creatures I don't think you can keep pushing the issue.  We have to remember what happened when some pushed the issue of the deceased PEFA on the top of one of Rochester's buildings. We are so lucky to be given the exposure that we have to this nest and consequently want more but realistically have to be thankful for the wonderful setup, our dedicated watchers, talented keepers of the records and cameras, lurkers and those at DEC and have patience for what may or may not come, don't you agree?
Absolutely, and that incident is precisely why I am not pushing the issue.
I am still patiently waiting to hear if Unity's egg last year was fertile or not  secret2

nobody cleans out a wild nest, but the algae means its staying wet, not having enough drainage could cause problems if not to the eyas then to the box itself shorten its useful life.

Starling?
can't tell. But what did they eat that had brown feathers? You can see some of them in that corner

also seems to be a lot of algae growing on the box.
163  Other Nature Related Information / Falcon Web Cams / Re: Canada Falcons: All but those hatched in Rochester on: 12-Jun-13, 08:00:46 PM
are they going to be able to band with such an age difference?
164  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Feeding times on: 09-Jun-13, 10:48:21 PM
These feeding charts are fascinating!    Dot.CA  is doing much more feeding this year than last, but they also have two more mouths to feed.    Orion was well fed last year!   The tandem feeding this year ...as much as we have seen of it almost seems that these two are in competition.
Archer feeding Callidora and Jemison in 2010?    I can't believe he participated so little!  Wow!
I wonder if it was his size?  Isn't Dot. ca a much larger tiercel than Archer?
Is Dot.ca a better hunter?
Archer was a little dude. My memory says he was a good hunter. He just let beauty have her way more. Dot definitely is a bigger guy and therefore more able to catch bigger game.
165  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Feeding times on: 09-Jun-13, 04:23:32 PM
Beauty sure has loosened the reigns over the years!
or allowing DC to feed keeps him downtown and away from BS and Pigott. Beauty is a smart cookie
