Legacy Located at St. Mary’s Cement in Bowmanville!!
April 13, 2013 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Tracy Simpson Reports:
A bit of exciting news for Rhea Mae and Tiago! Legacy, their offspring from the 2010 nesting season, has been indentified and located at the St. Mary’s Cement plant in Bowmanville with a female named Buffy. The St. Mary’s pair failed to hatch eggs in 2010 and 2011 and then last year, they altered the location of their nest site to the east silos and hatched at least two eggs. Last year, as Legacy reached adulthood, may have been the year that he arrived and took over the territory which would coincide with the observed changes in nest site location and behaviour. Congratulations Rhea Mae and Tiago on another offspring successfully making his way in the world!!
For the complete story, please visit the St. Mary’s Cement page!! at CPF's site.
:More offspring to follow! More M and K genes to follow! RM at T are doing a good job! Such good news from all the ROC falcons settled in Canada! Quest, Linn, Rhea Mae, is it listed anywhere? How long Rhea Mae has nested here and just how many offspring she has produced. Just wondered.(is she as prolific as her Mama ?)

So last night, as most nights, I had a dream about what's going on in my life. This one had a pretty clear message for a change.
In my dream I was reminded that I had never even heard the term egg-bound until I met Beauty. We have had a discussion about whether a PeFa can get egg-bound every single season we've watched her.
This bird requires an abundance of patience.
has the poor girl ever had a "normal" nesting season? I don't think so. There is always one kind of stress or another. Not having a faithful mate with a lady just ready to step into your home has got to be top of that list. First Archer and now DC.

I am confused and hardly know where to start with the questions. I know they boarded up Pigott's scrape with the broken glass, but now where is the cubby you all refer to? Is it suitable for nesting? And has Beauty been copulating with both Dot.ca and the newly arrived unbanded tiercel? And did she not also copulate with the UT who was around before DC came back from migration? If Beauty lays eggs, how will anyone know who the male parent is? Maybe this is one way of broadening the gene pool for peregrines but it might make a real mess of the family tree. Dot in PA Pigott's cubby-I don't know the actual layout, but I recall it being described as a sheltered nook. Sounded like a reasonable scrape site, but no one has seen the actual spot. [edit-hope this doesn't break the rules-please fee free to edit if I said too much]-It appears this UT is the same UT Beauty was with in the week before Dot returned from migration. Have they copulated? One instance that MAK saw today is all we know for sure. -Doesn't really matter who the Daddy is in the end. As long as one or both support Beauty. I took Cornell's Courtship & Rivalry in Birds course this winter. A young male sneaking into an established pair and adding himself into the gene pool is quite common in smaller birds. Before so many pefas were banded, who knows how often this might have happened. hey if Dot.ca is going to have two females i think it serves him right if Beauty gets a little nookie from another guy

If DC keeps taking the food... how does that bode for this pair??
No clue-though I would think if she really wanted to keep it she would have. Strange pair. I think she is letting him take it, maybe to show him how good she is at catching prey. I don't think she really likes him but he is the only game in town, no other tiercel seems to be able to take over the territory. If I recall correctly he took stuff last year too. But when it came to Orion he got his act together. Maybe because she let DC hatch the egg. She is a smart cookie.
