On March 7, 19/K had a territorial battle with his son, Mintaka, in the nest box. 19/K lost. I believe he has returned to Lincoln. I did see a peregrine at the Lincoln nest yesterday; not sure if it was 19/K.

Wow..not good! Is Hera still at this site?  I used to watch it but haven't checked it this year.

I'm not sure, Kris. The cams were down from September 9 of last year until about ten days ago, so it was not possible to know what was happening. The only views I have had in the last few days have been of someone's lower back and tail feathers. I hope Hera is still there; if she is, it will be her tenth year at the nest.

I wonder if 19/K went looking for a new nest site because of the loss of all his chicks last year. At the Woodmen nest, the chicks survived the same terrible storm. Also, back in 2008, all the chicks were lost at the Lincoln nest. The nest box does not offer enough protection; the site is very exposed and extremely windy. A good solid nest box with sides and a roof, and the bottom part of the front closed in, would be safer and give more protection.

I think this cam should provide good views of eggs and chicks, not to mention the view from the nest.

It seems that Diana is still the resident female this year. Don't know who the male is.

I thought they might stop at four eggs:

But now they have five!

I hope everything will go well for them this year.

Sad turn of events, but not totally unexpected either. Hope Madame X is out there doing well...

Meanwhile...purple USFWS band is midwest. They've only relatively recently started using black/green bands. There are 14 with B/G *P/* (sideways P-in the black-band is upside down) from 2007 through 2012. Mostly Michigan with 3 Indiana & 2 Kentucky, all but one banded as female. I'd guess there are notes somewhere of a B/G band put on upside down in one of those places.

This pic is from the Hamilton FB page by Charles Gregory

From the Hamilton archive. She's very dark. Reminds me a bit of Beauty.

I also saved a pic from the cam today of a bird with a black/green band. I was not happy to see that.

Midwest birds were banded black/green up to and including 2008. In 2009, they began using black/red.

I hope Madame X is okay.

What a horrible year this has been so far.

There is a possible pip in the third egg, according to the site:

Romeo and Juliet have been incubating two eggs. Yesterday morning, a pip appeared in one of the eggs, and this morning the first eaglet has hatched.

Such great news about a second clutch for PPO and Pappa. So happy for them.

From the site this evening:

Two chicks confirmed. One egg still in the nest.

One of the 2012 juvies from the Lincoln nest has shown up in Texas. That year there were two chicks, both male. After banding, they were named Lewis and Clark in a "name the chicks" contest.

Lewis (10/R) has travelled a long way from Lincoln, Nebraska to The Woodlands, Texas -- about 849 miles. I wonder if he is spending the winter there. His parents, Alley and 19/K, do not migrate, so I find it a little surprising that Lewis has gone so far south.

Lewis is a very handsome tiercel. I think he looks like his Dad, with his solid dark hood:

Lewis and his brother at banding:
