I have faith in this pair, Alison. They rode out a similar storm last year just as the eggs were hatching...
Both eaglets hatched surrounded by snow...
I remember that too from last year -- I know the eagles can deal with these conditions. I hope the storm doesn't continue for too long.

I really feel the same about Kaver, (just in denial) over it. It's heartbreaking, he was such a LOVE. As far as Mariah goes....I shudder to think.
I agree, Donna. I really miss Kaver -- he was the very best. I can only hope Mariah will find a new, supportive mate this year, and perhaps be provided with a nest far enough away from Beauty and Archer to be safe.

Many thanks to everyone who signed the petition. The peregrines will still have their nest this year.
From the resident of Sussex Heights who originally raised the alarm:
Great news! After a lot of TV and press coverage the board have agreed that the birds can stay for at least the upcoming season. It gives us time to figure a way of doing the building work around the birds. It is all about health and safety they reckon. So the Brighton camera should be up and running for 2010. Thank you everyone who signed our petition and gave us your expert views.

One of the residents at Sussex Heights was the first to draw attention to this situation on the Raptor Resource site: The board of Directors of Sussex heights have decided to remove the peregrine nesting box on our roof. They did not inform the residents/owners at Sussex heights of their plans.
Please see our petition and let everyone knowhttp://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/PeregrineFalconsI asked the original poster for more information, and here is yesterday's update: The board of directors of the building decided without consulting the residents. The reason is that normally we undertake no work on the building during the breeding season Feb through till June...... for years that has not been a problem but we have a new Chairman and he has just pushed this through without any consultation with the residents association. The residents have seen no data to back up the boards' decision and we have been asking for that since we found out about their plans less than two weeks ago. The buiding is planning redecoration and essential work over the next 7 years and it is my belief it can be done without moving the nesting box. The SOS and RSPB are of the same opinion.
Tonight the board are holding a board meeting after which they say they will give us their decision.
The board members are mainly normal residents just like the rest of us but they have shown utter disregard for their fellow residents over this. And another update: wow!!! you guys have really boosted our petition already... the more comments we get from real enthusiasts around the world will let this tiny board of people know just what a silly thing they are planning. They are talking about it only being 6 years that the box will be down and the birds can come back then.... thats so dumb.I have watched this nest for several years, and would hate to see the peregrines lose their nest. Perhaps with enough media attention and protests, it will be possible to prevent this from happening.

The chicks have now been named. From the site:
We are proud to announce Alcoa Anglesea's three chicks for 2009: Froona, Barega and Warrun. Thank you to everyone who emailed us with their expert opinions. The general consensus was that we have one female and two male chicks, with the brothers exhibiting more developed juvenile plumage compared to their big fluffy sister. It is an honour that our female chick is named Froona. We had an overwhelming response from members of Bird Cams Around the World to recognise Froona Veldhuis from the Netherlands, a devoted advocate for the Peregrine Falcon, who died unexpectedly in April this year. Our two boys have been named Barega and Warrun. Both names are from the Aboriginal language meaning 'the wind' and 'the sky' respectively. It is fitting that these two brothers, indistinguishable from each other without bands, have names from similar origins. Thank you to Linda (USA) and Ingrid (Netherlands) who suggested these names for our two boys.
