Very sad news from the AT&T peregrine nest in Detroit.

From the Southeast Michigan group:

Chris Becher reported that the 17 year old male at this site, Bud-z (black/green S/B) was found injured and died yesterday on the way to the vet hospital. He was banded at the Commodore Perry Motor Inn in Toledo, Ohio in 2000 and had been nesting at the AT&T building in Detroit since 2009.

Beautiful photo of Bud-z by Barb Baldinger.

He was a very handsome tiercel, and he looked very familiar, with his solid dark hood and faintly gray cheeks.

Bud-z was the son of Fury, banded *G/A, born at the Fort Wayne nest, and *7/X, born at the Dayton, Ohio nest.

Fury's parents were the legendary Freedom and Roosevelt, who owned the Fort Wayne nest for many years. Roosevelt also had the full dark hood.

Roosevelt's father was the great Bandit of the Rhodes Tower in Columbus, Ohio, and his mother was Aurora from Ontario, Canada. Bandit, too, had the full dark hood with faintly gray cheeks.

Bandit, great-grandfather of Bud-z.

I thought that was a really good rescue by the lobster fishermen, John Chipman Jr. and Kevin Meaney.

The article I read had some different photos and a short video of the eagle.

In the article, sternman Kevin Meaney commented:

β€œI took the cover off the bait tank and tied it on [to the life ring], and made him a little life raft, He got right on it,” Meaney said. β€œI kind of reached down, patted the top of his head, and told him it would be all right.”

And at the end of the article he says:

β€œIt was the most incredible thing that ever happened to me,” Meaney said. β€œTo me, that was worth well more than hitting the lottery.”

I wish there were a lot more people like John Chipman Jr. and Kevin Meaney.

Injured eagle's surgery at Henry Doorly Zoo 'went very smoothly,' doctor says

A more complete update on the eagle from omaha.com. It includes a video in which Dr. Stice provides information on the surgery. Not only does she do remarkable work; she also donated her services to help this eagle.

Poor guy. eagle Hope the feather graft is successful, allowing him to survive in the wild. Wonder how this odd injury occurred.

Dot in PA

The plastic surgeon, Dr. Stice, determined that his injury was caused by an electrical burn of some kind, which not only destroyed the skin and tissue on the top of his head, but also two layers of bone. This poor eagle has been through so much.

He is now out of surgery. This small update was posted two hours ago:

OMAHA, Neb. β€”

A bald eagle that was found injured on Memorial Day underwent surgery Friday.

The eagle, injured in June, was rescued by Fontenelle Forest's Raptor Recovery Center.

The animal is recovering from surgery at the Henry Doorly Zoo.

Doctors said the animal suffered an electrical burn on the top of its head. Surgeons and veterinarians removed the charred bone and completed a skin graft.

"So, Dr. Shrader took feathers and skin from the eagle's groin and fashioned it in the shape of the wound on his head, and we sewed it to the top of his head," Dr. Coleen Stice said.

There are also updates on the Fontenelle Forest Raptor Recovery site, with question and answer videos with Dr. Stice. I can see the videos, but for some reason the sound is distorted and unintelligible. Not sure why.

I hope everything goes well for the eagle's recovery. Just glad that people have been willing to help him.
