Sheriff's deputies rescue falcon from Irondequoit Bay

June 26, 2017 03:52 PM

Alert sheriff's deputies saved a young peregrine falcon from drowning this weekend.

In a Facebook post, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office says the marine unit deputies were on patrol in Irondequoit Bay when they spotted the falcon struggling in the water.

The deputies were able to pull the falcon out before it went under.

News10NBC says great job deputies!

I'm very glad the sheriff's deputies were there to help this little juvie. I wonder where he or she might have been from?

Anyone heard any news lately on Diamante?  Last word was that he was to be transported to Syracuse over a month ago.

I haven't heard anything either Pat. Hope he's doing well.  heart

I have been checking also, but have not found anything new.

I did find a very short video in slow motion of Diamanté flying when he was still at Erie County SPCA. I had not seen it before. Here are links in case anyone else missed it.

Visited the Madison site earlier today and found a peregrine checking out the nest.

Not too much later, I checked the site again and found that she had laid her first egg!

The female here is named Trudy and the male is Melvin. There has also been another male around named Suzuki.

I hope there will be no problems, especially since Trudy has started laying her eggs.

Still uncovered at 10:50 PM!!   Hmmmm

And still no peregrines around at 11:15 p.m. your time. I don't know how long these eggs have been uncovered, but I have a really bad feeling that something has happened here. I hope I'm wrong.

The resident female laid her third perfect egg this evening at 10:04 p.m.

The last time I saw the eggs was on March 23. At that time there were five eggs! I don't know if this is the final count or not. Have not been able to catch the birds off the eggs for the past few days.

The Manchester peregrines have two eggs so far, laid on March 29 and March 31. A third egg is due any time now.

Thought I'd start a new thread just for these two and if Cadence is still around, it can be posted under the Cadence thread, if that's OK!

I think that is a very good idea, Donna.

This year, the female laid her first egg on March 18. I have not seen her off the eggs since March 25, when there were three eggs.

Now, she is incubating five beautiful eggs! I have never seen five eggs at this nest before.

553  Other Nature Related Information / Falcon Web Cams / Re: Tacony-Palmyra Bridge, Palmyra Cove, New Jersey on: 02-Apr-17, 04:11:03 PM
Last year, the Tacony-Palmyra pair raised three chicks. Three were banded, but it seems that one was lost at fledging. The details provided were "One fledgling DOR 6/7."  Not sure what DOR stands for.

On August 6, 2016, a male juvie from this nest, banded 94/AM, was killed at Harrisburg Airport.  Sad

So only one of last year's juvies is still potentially out there somewhere.

Thank you for the video, Donna. It would not play for me, but I will try again later.

I have been checking in on this site daily, and several times a day over the last few days, but not much was happening until this morning.

A little after 7 a.m., there was eggshell, but no view of a chick.
