A new photo of Diamante, just posted on Peregrine Place. I've been wondering all day how he is doing. This update is encouraging. What a beautiful and brave tiercel he is. DIAMANTE' I just received this from Diamante's vet at the SPCA-Wildlife Division, Karen Slote, DVM. She loves him too! And as she said, he is doing well, standing and eating when fed.

All four chicks hatched at this nest. With four chicks, there is usually one smaller one, as there was in this case. Mom always made sure the little one was up front to be fed, and all four had full crops each time. Dad is an excellent provider. All four fledged successfully as far as I know. Mom had been coming home to sleep in her nest each night for a while; then she disappeared for a number of days. She returned, and then was gone again for a number of nights. Tonight she is back in her nest, with a very full crop.

I saw the very sad news about YY on the Norwich site yesterday. Poor little one. She had very little peace in her way too short life; only the time she spent in the nest with her Dad. I hope there will be an update on exactly what caused the loss of this little beauty. Normally, a fractured coracoid has a good prognosis. And what a terrible year for her Dad, with the loss of all four of his chicks and very probably also of his long time, and very bonded, mate. They were such a great pair for many years.

Wow! What a handsome juvie! I think this does look like Leo. For what it's worth, after pushing the image as far as I can in Photoshop, I am fairly sure that the bottom part of the band is BA.
If this is indeed Leo, he has travelled quite a distance, especially for a male juvie. The distance from Rochester to Hampton Beach State Park is at least 430.9 miles.

Sage posted this on Peregrine Place four hours ago:
So sorry to have to share this. Gleig's beautiful mate Diamante' is the injured Peregrine who is being treated now at the Wildlife Division of the SPCA of Erie County.
He had surgery for the puncture wound to his neck. He also has a broken wing and other injuries. I will post updates as they are available.
His severe injuries lead us to think It was a fight for the nest site. I will go check the site tomorrow to see if Gleig is onsite or gone.
Some history: Gleig and Diamante' took over the site from Stash and Stella and Stella was found dead on the roof the next spring. This is life as a Peregrine Falcon.
I checked this site last Thursday and found Gleig on the perch and Diamante' on the ledge under the perch. It seemed they were having a conversation. Friday she was on her perch and Diamante' was near the top of the tower on a lookout point. I wonder if he knew there was another Peregrine nearby.

I am very sad that Diamante has been injured, but very grateful to the person who found him. At least he is being cared for and receiving the help he needs. Hoping for a complete recovery for this special tiercel. I also hope that Gleig is okay. She is a big, strong falcon, which may help her defend her territory.
