976  Other Nature Related Information / Falcon Web Cams / Re: Syracuse Falcons on: 27-Jul-16, 04:57:47 PM
I haven't posted any Pigott updates in a bit.  Both this past weekend and the weekend before Don and I were downtown Syracuse looking for the family.  We found Pigott and George hanging out at the Harrison Tower, the first weekend.  This past weekend Pigoot was sleeping at Harrison, while George was on the Hill's Building watching Chayton who was on City Hall.

We were entertained by Chayton both weekends, but did not see Cholena either weekend.  A week ago Chayton went into a stoop after a pigeon who was only a few feet away from us...yikes!!!  It was the closest I had been to a falcon in the wild!!  It happened so fast and was so close that Don could not get a pic...lol!  Chayton also chased a gull by the OnCenter parking lot.  Don promises to download his pics once he gets back into town, and when he does I'll post them on the FB page.

BTW, for those not in town, the State Tower is now engulfed in scaffolding.  I trust Pigott will figure something out, though.

Suzanne

Thank you so much for the update on the Syracuse peregrines. I have really missed seeing them on cam this year. Happy to know they raised two chicks; I hope Chayton will continue to fly safely and that Cholena is okay and was just not in view when you were there.

Nothing ever seems to be easy for Pigott. I hope things will work out well for her and George and their nest site.

It was Dot.ca's turn to visit the nest box.

He usually has a white bib, but today he seems to be trying to emulate Beauty's soft salmon coloring.

As soon as Beauty left, the juvie moved into the nest box. It was Aria.

She started calling to be fed, and remained in her somewhat hunched over, fluffed out pose:

It was great to see that long bonding session this morning!

The Scottish Seabird Centre has a number of webcams which follow various seabirds at locations off the east coast of Scotland.

I found this little guy at Craigleith today:

And a non-urban peregrine on the small island of Fidra:

I've watched this cam for quite a while and there's been many problems.  Mom has disappeared twice for 5 days which compromised adequate nutrition for the Eaglet.  One night, there were poachers that attempted to take the Eaglet.  Luckily, cam watchers alerted people about what was happening.  They have a really good FB page where they post day events with videos plus a good English translation.  This was the post from the night the poachers came.  The video of the occurrence is on FB.

Thank you, Kris! I was aware that Mom had disappeared for five days, but I did see Dad at the nest during that time. I did not know about the poachers attempting to steal the eaglet. I am so glad that they were stopped, and that the little guy was safely returned to the nest. It is great that people responded so quickly to rescue him.

Webcams unquestionably save lives, and do help to protect the birds in most cases (except for one infamous incident in which the perpetrators also stole the cams).

I hope the little eaglet will fledge safely and have a long and successful life. He is a beautiful little bird.

Nice to know you are following this nest too -- I didn't think anyone else here did. I have been watching this nest for some months now, since before there was a chick.
982  Other Nature Related Information / Raptor Web Cams / Short-toed Eagle webcam, Israel on: 27-Jul-16, 01:02:41 AM
There is a webcam somewhere in Israel which follows a family of Short-toed Eagles (Circaetus Gallicus). For the safety of the birds, the location is not disclosed.

There is one chick in the nest. I think he (or she) will be fledging soon, since he has aready ventured onto a branch. The nest is in a carob tree.

That hawk is just too cute! I saw this elsewhere yesterday, but the video had been removed there too.

It did work for me at this link:

A little more bonding. DC left; Beauty stayed for a little while.

Glad you caught them...I've been striking out today!

Just happened to catch them at the nest, Dumpsterkitty. Was hoping to see one or more of the juvies, but haven't seen a single juvie all day.

Fontenelle Forest Raptor Recovery is not keeping little Hunter after all.

Today it was announced that he has been relocated to the Teton Raptor Center.

We're excited to announce that Hunter, the non-releasable peregrine falcon who hatched at the Woodmen Tower this year, has reached his new home at the Teton Raptor Center!

Hunter is currently getting acclimated to his new home in gorgeous western Wyoming. He will be an education bird, helping people learn more about raptors and the dangers they face.

I hope everything will go well for Hunter in his new home, and that he will have a long, safe and happy life as an education ambassador.
990  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Peregrine juvie rescued from Phoenix casino balcony on: 25-Jul-16, 03:45:35 PM
From Tom Pierre:

I am on the rescue and transport for Liberty Wildlife and received a call of a 'hawk' on the 15th floor at Talking Stick Casino today. Turns out, it was a juvenile Peregrine Falcon. After a check up, fluids and food, we released her back into the wild a couple of hours ago.

There are good things happening and when the fastest bird in the world needs help, we are there to help.

I hope you share the slideshow as it shows from the moment we started the rescue to the release back into the wild.
