I agree Allison. Y Our translation was better than the one I did at BCATW  They have been very careful in rehabilitation of S2. Maybe because I am familiar with the works of the falconers, I understand , their cautiousness. Others may have continued with her training, but they know better. Well done , to all volunteers adn those invoved with her rehab.

I will keep S2 and them in my prayers

There are a lot of falcon purists that don't support the cross breeding that was done - they consider it a pollution of the original North American falcon genes (the Anatum)

I have to wonder if they would have been happier to have "pure" genetics in the only anatums left in the natural history museum along side the passenger pigeon.

As I understand it there were so few anatums left there would have been far too much close relative interbreeding to restore a healthy population.  I believe most captive bred birds were from a very few ancestors. And we can see that the anatum traits are still strong. Time will tell if it becomes more prevalent.

Now the cross breeding between peregrines & gyrfalcons is another issue altogether...

I wish you could have all been in Edmonton when Gordon gave his talk  at our fund raiser. they call him the falcon guru because he has been with falcons since he was a teenager. He was involved in the come back of the falcons in Wainwright Alberta.I am sure this is well documented . they gathered up the last remaining falcons and started breeding .

His talk explains the whole process of how they started the breeding etc. All the trials and errors and then the success. He talks with such a passion and love of falcons.

Beauty on FCT, no Orion or DC yet. DC was apparently at BS this am.

Sigh! Had a feeling we were going to be seeing less of the little guy soon. He's been getting more independent every day.

must remember that with him being the only juvenile , they can just concentrate on him and so he will be independent quicker. he may be catching food when he is away and they top it up for him if he needs it

Seems way too soon for him to leave.  According to Froona, they start leaving 8-12 weeks after fledging and it's just shy of 6 weeks since Orion fledged plus they were still giving him food up until a couple days ago. Of course, there's always the rule breaker!

OK...last post on the topic...I made a collage with yesterday on the left & June 30 on the right.

I think you can see where there are enough differences to make me stop & ask.

I didn't know the chest feathers could make that much of a change during molting...thanks for that tip bev!

I apologize for raising a ruckus!  Embarrassed

When I first saw our young adult male like that towards end of august , I thought something was wrong( as he had been so white) so I talked to our biologist and this is whine he explained the molting and change of colors etc. He said this is good becasue it shows they are healthy.

lighting ann poop art can do strange things. A year ago , when I was Id ing our male in Edmonton, a few people said the band was green and I knew it was my male and it was black. It was the way the light hit the band that made it look greenish. Lighting at this time of year is tricky.
then last year , around this time, someone thought our female had changed because band number looked different. On clsoer investigation, the band had poop on it .

so all this leads me to believe it is DC. I thought it looked like a 3

I am disgusted and signed the petition with comment.

Victoria airport uses boom guns to scare eagles and other birds away. they have a lot more eagles out there. the guns are just a sound. this would make sense here.
I am really ashamed of the powers to be. complete idiots.

Glad they realized their other \location was just not a sound location, and put it back at Power station. I would think they would nest there as they laid eggs there last year on smooth surface.
