Poachers have used poison to kill 41 elephants in Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park, an official has told the BBC.  Zimbabwe Parks spokeswoman Caroline Washaya Moyo said it was suspected that cyanide was used to poison salt pans but tests are still being carried out.  She said it was Zimbabwe's worst case of elephant poaching.

No birthday wildlife sightings today beyond some pigeons drinking water off the sidewalk, a bunch of ants, and three serious hipsters with silly hats on. Oh, and a medium-length centipede.  Slim pickins, you might say, but a good day all in all.

It's a news report -  says that (duh) some unknown person apparently glued a plastic cap onto the pigeon's head, and how it isn't the first time a bird has been found to have had a hat glued on it. The prank has been criticized as cruelty to animals; the reporter says that if the cap doesn't fall off, it may eventually cause the bird's death.

terrific pictures. I actually saw an osprey (with a nest) harass both a GBH and an egret a number of weeks ago on the south side of Chicago. Sort of arbitrarily harass them; they were just standing around the fish lake minding their own herony fishing businesses. The GBH, when chased, pulled out all the stops and flew with its neck out (they don't), barking like a dog.
