Camera page tests causing live feed problems
Published 8 November, 2013

In an attempt to shorten the sometimes long buffering times on the live camera feeds for external viewers we made some technical changes today, which don’t appear to have fixed the problem. Apologies to all viewers for the loss of vision but we hope to have the feeds back to the original pages by tomorrow.

It’s quiet up the tower with a little peregrine interaction, lots of sleep for Swift, and some high-speed fly-pasts by male falcon Beau. We still have about a month’s window for any possible 2nd mating, but the two birds aren’t showing too much enthusiasm just at the moment!

Finally there’s rain predicted for a few days this weekend, so we should see some improvement in conditions outside.

A peregrine falcon was shot dead at Buskett Wednesday afternoon.

Police sources confirmed to The Malta Independent that the falcon was recovered dead by its owner soon after it was shot. The hunter who shot it down has so far not been caught.

It is not the first time that protected birds have been shot in the Buskett area.

The bird that was shot Wednesday at about 4pm had a bright yellow ribbon attached to one of its legs to show that it was not a wild bird but it was still shot down by the hunter, who killed it with one single shot.

Captive bred falcons cost hundreds of euros, some as much as €1,000. The hunter who shot it did not collect the bird, which was later recovered by its owner.

Why will these beautiful birds shot down? It is very sad. Cry

Season 6 2013 video clips

Published 3 November, 2013

With the presumption of normal operations to our Project website we’ve added some of this season’s video clips. It’s proving to be fun with these 2 new HD cameras as the video quality is so good it’s making the video file sizes enormous so we’re testing to reduce file sizes on uploading!!

First video we see Swift laying her first egg in early morning, back in August. The second clip shows Beau and Swift in a bowing moment – it’s good to see these two interacting for us in the cameras! In the third clip we see a sad moment as Swift removes her 3rd and last damaged egg to the side.

This week we’ll be attaching the new HD ledge camera to our Milestone surveillance/recording server and we hope to be bringing some high quality clips to you from the ledge soon.

After months of background work, good networking and some in-depth inquiries, we’ve finally had our domain name cleared from all malware listings, months after the website itself was actually cleared and secured. Rest assured now that the name, falconcamproject.org is good to go again and we can continue the Project in the knowledge that news, photos and information we bring to the worldwide community of peregrine falcon research will continue to contribute to the international effort in understanding and protecting this incredible bird species. In studying these birds we also hope to contribute to a better understanding of all species endangered by human encroachment across the globe.

We received an email today from another really interesting peregrine falcon monitoring group in Ontario, Canada. The link to the Hamilton Community Peregrine Project has been added to the links on the right hand side. Thanks for your email, Christina; always good to compare notes from around the world!

Thanks to all our supporters and viewers for sticking with us! Now we await more news from Swift and Beau, in the hope of a second breeding cycle this season – fingers crossed…

We’re still watching and waiting for any signs of another laying. Both birds can be animated at times, Swift is spending plenty of time on the scrape, with Beau spotted bringing her food every so often, some verbal conferences down in the trees and in flight above the tower, but to this end no further signs of another laying just yet.
