This is not a good way to start the season.  We here in Rochester are sure very grateful for the part he played in propagating the species.  At least he is no longer suffering.  RIP Surge.

Sad loss of the remaining eaglet at the Blackwater Refuge nest

I am so very sorry to report the sudden loss of the remaining eaglet at the Blackwater nest. After the death of the smaller eaglet a week ago, the remaining eaglet seemed to be thriving and was seen active and eating early this afternoon. Unfortunately a later view showed the deceased eaglet laying outside the nest bowl. It is unknown what happened.

Yes, and I think the piles are, dare I say it, melting a tiny bit?  Seems to me they were a bit higher a few days ago.

It's really sad when you walk out the door and breath in the cold 10 degree (F) air and think, it's really kind of nice out here.   

No new snow, no wind to speak of and the roads were clear down to pavement.  Have a nice day everyone!

Hah! I'll bet it was Dot.ca who flew east off the SE wing of TSB  Looks like he landed on the main cam right after I tweeted about it.  Maybe he and Beauty were both keeping an eye on the kestrel.

One more try for the black-eyed susans and the echinacea.

By the lake in Irondequoit we still have close to two feet of snow on the ground, not counting the drifts and the piles made by the plows.  I really don't mind the cold that much, except for the fact that it's been so cold that the endless amounts of snow we're getting doesn't melt.  At least the roads were fairly good today, unlike most other days lately. 

Here are some pictures I took last summer.  The black-eyed susans and the echinacea were in our garden and the sunflower was at a friend's farm.  Enjoy!
