I have neglected to mention that this past Sunday, when Susan and I were falcon watching on the high falls pedestrian bridge, we met an interesting fellow who just happened to be passing by. His name is Jim, and while at Cornell in 1969, he co-authored one of the first research articles on the steps needed to bring the wild peregrine falcon population back from the brink. He was very interested in our falcons, so we told him about rfalconcam. I hope he checks us out and joins the forum!

I looked at the Charlotte pier and the Summerville pier when I got home from work today and saw some of the same type of waves. The first thing I thought of was that this storm is a nor'easter, the only type of storm that will create whitecaps like that on this portion of the lake's southern shore. Nice that I can now think of a cute little falcon while we're getting pounded with wind, rain or snow from the northeast!

Those are both good signs that Veteran will stay put. With all the busy-ness of this season, starting with Pigott's departure, Beauty and Dot.ca's 2014 family and the discovery of Veteran and Luzerne, I haven't really looked for Billy in a long time. Perhaps she moved on. She is, after all, a peregrine. It would indeed be sweet if she is still in the vicinity and would like to settle down and mate with Veteran.
I too feel awful about Luzerne and Voyager. The lump in my throat and the tears in my eyes re-appear just with typing their names. At least they got to enjoy a year of beautiful flight.

Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Voyager's Lessons for Us All

Last year I had the privilege of naming one of the baby falcons at the Times Square Building in Rochester NY. The name I chose for her was 'Voyager'. To me, it emphasized the adventurous nature of the peregrine falcon, and the best in spirit of people when they are moving forward with life to whatever our destiny is. I learned today, that as often happens in nature, Voyager had to be euthanized in Canada after an apparently savage battle. One in five peregrines makes it to year two. Voyager did not make it, but in her time, I'm sure, she carried on the spirit of the peregrine, and contributed her part in this recovering species' proud legacy and awesome future.
Well said, Larry. I remember questioning the name of Voyager for a female at the time, but it was the perfect name for her, even though her voyage was brief. I'm very sorry for your loss, and that of all the other rfalconcam fans as well.

I feel lucky that I got to see Luzerne in person several times and that I got a few good pictures of her. She was beautiful in her juvie to sub-adult plumage. I also feel good that we named her. It would be a shame to have to refer simply to her band numbers in death. She was more than a number over a letter.

Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Voyager Found Injured in Kitchener, Ontario

So very sorry to have to report this. Rest in peace, precious Voyager. !!! Very sad news to report about Voyager -the little Rochester N.Y. female retrieved in the KW area. July 24, 2014 - Kitchener - Sun Life Centre CPF Postmaster Reports: July 24th - 2014 Voyager update: Some sad news. Marion reports this afternoon: I was in contact with the Owl foundation today to get an update on Voyager and was told that she was examined on July 22nd. She had serious injuries to her “wrist/hand” or metacarpal bone,, it was completely destroyed in addition to the server bruising on her radial ulna. They contacted the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and got the approval to put her down. She was put down yesterday - (July 23rd - 2014). As an adult wild bird with such serious injuries they felt she would not have done well in captivity and would not be able to fly up to perches. Sadly, we agree the only humane thing to do was to euthanize her. They said she was 762 grams at intake and was very thin.
