Food was definitely involved.  When I came in to work I saw the falcon on the base prepping the food, and the feathers were flying.

Well, that'll teach me not to be on time to work! If I had been running late I would have seen both of them.  Dang!

The Great Blue Heron was the puzzle again today.  My time: 4 min 42 sec for the 48 piece classic.

Wow, the situation at Etobicoke is very interesting. And sad if it's not O'Connor. It looks like a different bird to me, but as you said, the angles and the lighting are not quite the same.  It would be quite a coincidence if the nest was taken over by another black over green banded bird who gets along well with Lucky and whose whole takeover was off-cam. I guess stranger things have happened, though. If it's not O'Connor, I hope she's okay wherever she is.

Interestingly Ivy has been seen in Downsview Park and so has Lucky (he likes to hang out there off season) over the past two years - both have been photographed there on separate occasions by Rob (who took that Ivy photo I posted) and other bird enthusiasts in the city.  Soooo..perhaps they've met before.

Oooo, the plot thickens.

Any pefas hanging by their talons in that photo?

This how they do it in Australia.

Apparently Diamond has done her sad duty.

Vale egg # 3
Published 9 October, 2017 | By Cilla Kinross
I’m just back from Sydney and will take several days to catch up, but I can confirm that on 8th October at 0739 h,  Diamond picked up egg, took it the ledge, possibly opened the shell a bit more, then took it as if to feed to the chicks; thought better of it (and the chicks did not show much interest), spent a bit of time at the ledge (perhaps eating, but her back was turned), then took off with it.

Dot.ca, looking serious:

He does look a bit perturbed, particularly in the 9:07 pic.

Diamond is still incubating the two chicks who have hatched and the one still partially in the egg. It is probably dead.  She's got her wing over it. Fortunately I think it's warm enough there that the other two chicks will probably be all right if they're not totally tucked in.  She was panting yesterday, as if it was hot. At least I hope so.

Dot.ca was looking for his girl a while ago.

Apparently that last one is stuck.  Now Diamond is blocking our view of the chicks and seems to be just shading them, perhaps trying to give the littlest one some space to break free.  I do hope he/she makes it! Both Diamond and Xavier took turns trying to break the shell, to no avail.

Xavier is a first time dad. As you may recall, he was the somewhat non-interested step-dad in last year's drama.  Diamond was awesome, raising three healthy fledglings after losing their dad, Bula, just before hatching. So far this year Xavier's done very well, both with incubating and now bringing food for the babies.
