Kittenface just posted this sad news over at BCAW:

FACEBOOK UPDATE SALT LAKE CITY

We have some bad news to report.  crying :' (On July 13, 2013, Solo, the only young-of-the-year peregrine falcon to hatch at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building (JSMB) this year, died from injuries sustained on July 3. The injuries were a result of a high-speed impact into the north face of the Zion’s Bank Tower located due south of the JSMB. Following his injury and rescue, Solo was transported to a Salt Lake City rehabilitation facility where supportive therapies were started under the care of Jo Stoddard. X-rays were taken on July 5. While no fractures were evidenced, Solo suffered soft tissue, nerve and spinal cord injuries. These injuries resulted in flaccid paralysis of both legs, incontinence and head trauma. While some slight improvement in the paralysis was detected over the 10-day holding period, other systems began to shut down. He was found dead midday on Saturday.

We are having severe thunder storms and power outages right now.  Bad line of storms moving through due to heat and humidity.

Edit to add:  severe flooding happening now in some areas.  Unbelievable amount of rain falling in the past hour.

I read about that on one of the bear boards I frequent, what a shame.  It will be open season on those poor bears now.  Humans have taken land away from far too many species and it seems the very people tasked with looking after them are putting the humans needs first instead of the bars.

I don't know what it's going to take to wake people up.  I think humans will not stop destroying and stealing the environment from the species we share earth with until a massive tragedy forces them too.  And they say we are the smarter species..I beg to differ.

Good write up kitty...you know Dundas and DotCa are related.  Dundas was Madame X's son and DotCa's dad was Madame X's son...sooooo a family gene?!  (MadameX had different mates in at the time so I'd say the gene is in her line not the males if this is indeed the case)

This is such a tough area to fledge.  Too many tall buildings with mirrored windows.   Sad

Isn't Toronto in the FLAP program? Are they taping their windows?  Have they started?   Sad

No one here is going their windows unless they are embarrassed into it in the media and taken to court like Cadillac Fairview was.

More recently here just last week, in my area where I live they tore down some of the oldest trees in Toronto - while reporters watched nesting birds panicking as their offspring died still in the nests in the trees - all so they can build glass condos that overlook High Park.

Frank was released last night to the rooftop.  Lizzie went to an avian vet.  That's all I know as of this morning, will know more later hopefully.

We spent an hour and half looking for Lizzie everywhere after work tonight.  I just got home awhile ago.  Where are you getting these messages from?  They aren't on CPF that I can see?

Trying to get through to Rob right now.

Angie posted in the Falconatics group

Rob's got her, she's alive and waiting on Bruce to arrive for assessment.

I recall Big Frank saying more than once that if they went down to the valley (deep woods) they'd never be able to find them and that it was the biggest fear of CPF watchers for a fledgling. I only hope Quest and Kendal know where she is and are feeding her. Fingers crossed!  pray

There are several parks/trails near there -  Moatfield Farm Park and there is also a walking trail known as the Betty Sutherland Trail (Park) -  there is a sidewalk or you can wander off by the river and make your own trail.  It's part of what is known as the Duncan Mills Greenbelt for those who want to experience some nature in the city.  I suppose to city people it would seem like deep woods.  There are old ruins in those 'woods' and due to the diversity of trees and plant life there it is protected.  The ruins are covered in brush, grasses, vines and all sorts of greenery there now so I guess to some it would seem quite 'wild'.  For sure it would be a pain to maneuver through but the guys with the spray cans managed to get through just fine to spray graffiti all over the ruins.

Not trying to make light of the situation by any means but the 'deep woods' comment threw me for a loop there.  Likely the two legged creatures there would be more dangerous - kind of like out where Pigott is if you know what I mean.

Woods or valley might not be the worst places for a fledgling to be. Fingers crossed.

Paul

I thought so too Paul but Ann said it's not good back there, lots of Coyotes and Foxes and no sounds coming from her back there.  Sad

If she's in a tree, she won't make noise to draw attention to herself.  Mackenzie spent a few days in a tree getting attacked by squirrels and crows until he figured out how to get out of a tight spot he was in - she may be in a place where she can't spread her wings out to take off and needs to figure out a way to move to somewhere she can.   And as nycbird says, if parents are relaxed then they likely know where she is.  Hoping for the best!

!!! Niagara falls - 4 hatchlings spotted!
June 06, 2013 - Niagara Falls
CPF Postmaster Reports:
June 6th - 2013Hi Again,

It’s really too bad you guys can’t get access to the building this year, because it looks like we were bang on with our hatch-date estimate of May 14. I saw four chicks in the nest window today that looked to be about 24-25 days old. Tomorrow would have been a perfect banding date. It’s hard to see in the photos, but at one point all four heads were poking up out of the big pile of white fluff. The female was perched on the broken window frame in front of the nest and the male was sitting on top of the building on the north (down-river) side.

I’m sure you guys are kept ultra-busy banding all those other babies up there! I hope you’re having a good season so far.

Cheers,
Jacquie

!!! Niagara Falls - Sadly we can not band the hatchlings!
June 03, 2013 - Niagara Falls
CPF Postmaster Reports:

We have received news today from OMNR that the Niagara parks commission has refused to allow access to the old OPG powerhouse roof that is needed to proceed with the banding of the young peregrine hatchlings, sighting health and safety concerns ??????????

Sadly, banding will not take place this year.
