Two years ago in Winnipeg, Trey the resident tiercel didn't come home from his annual migration.  He was 14 years old and I still remember the previous Fall when he left - there was a huge hurricane down in the Southern US and I remember clearly looking at a map and thinking he's heading straight for it as were all the other migrating birds from that area.  At the time I thought it was odd that it stayed in my mind like that but when he didn't come home next Spring - I flashed back to looking into his flight path and wondered if it wasn't somehow connected to that storm.

They don't have an easy life that's for sure.

3453  Rochester Falcons / Falcon Watches / Re: Falcon Fledge Watch (4-8 pm) Beauty and Orion (yes, Orion) Battle 3rd Falcon (female) and Escort on: 18-Aug-12, 07:15:43 AM
I'm not understanding DC's position here. Beauty & Orion battle intruding female and he sits and does nothing? He's not with Orion during the morning watch while MAK is there. Orion hunts with Beauty, talon tags with Beauty. What exactly is DC's role here? I've never heard of such a thing. Don't get me wrong here, I really like DC but I don't think he knows what his role is yet. If he's suppose to be watching the air space, he failed tonight letting his son take that role. It's said that males don't go after females that come into their territory but he had no problem going after Beauty. Hmmm. Help me out here guys!  ???

Perhaps an indication that is was indeed Pigott then who came into the territory.  He is bonded to both females now so how can he possibly choose between them?  In the beginning he was bonded with P and not with B so he had no issue trying to oust her, then along came Orion and now he's bonded to both females.

His father Jack is the same way, he seems content to let the females do all the defending unless it's another tiercel then he's all over it.  Even at banding, he screams a lot in the background and then takes off to his other site while mom is left to defend the kids and the site.  I remember the first time he did that, I was yelling at him as he was flying off to TR Mom leaving Angel to defend on her own lol

We aren't sure why that is - perhaps because he has two sites - it's a form of self preservation?  If he is injured then he'd have two females and two sets of offspring left without someone to protect and feed them?  Or if one of his mates is defeated, it's a way of being accepted by the new female so he can still be there to help his offspring, after all if he helps the new female might drive him out of the territory as well?

We really dont' know, this entire 'bigamous' thing has been a learning experience for all of us.  All we can do is document it as there is so little information out there about it - we really don't have much to compare it to.  But I do understand your confusion, believe me..been there, cursed the bird many times and scratched my head a lot as well.

unless they are radio tagged or seen en route how does anyone know where they go? No one knows where Kaver or Archer went.

No one can say 100% where Lady goes every winter however the great bird migration from Europe to Africa is well known and documented so I'm guessing they just assume that is where she has gone.  Given the time frame she leaves in it makes sense.  If she were staying in Europe, she could stay later but her early departure indicates that she has a long journey ahead of her.

I have a question for anyone reading my Watch Reports.  I've had a couple people send me emails saying that they are having trouble viewing my newer watch reports.  Has anyone else been have a problem seeing them?  Thanks! Carol P.

No problems here Carol!  Your reports are great and much appreciated as always  2thumbsup

A little bit of fiction doesn't hurt all that much.  Falcon watchers would have taken care of Beauty if they could.  And they would have rescued the egg if they had to.

Very nice story.   happy
