!!! Sad news to report. First mortality of the season! May 22, 2012 - Mississauga - Executive Centre CPF Postmaster Reports: May 22nd-2012 We have sad news to report. The first young juvenile took its first flight today, but sadly it was not a planned first flight. Ledge hopping had the juvenile named Jennifer - (banded Black 56 over X) come up short from one ledge to the other and a guest of wind had it in the air in a panic flight struggling to hold its altitude. In an effort to catch some air, it turned and with a tail wind slammed into the windows of MEC #1 and died on impact. 56 over X was picked up by Bruce and brought back to the CPF Raptor centre for holding until it can be transferred to the OMNR at our next meet. MNR has been notified. The other two MEC siblings are all doing fine and still on the nest ledge.

Breaking News: First Hatching underway
Posted on May 21, 2012 by rangeremma
First glimpse of egg hatching 7am : Our female ospreys behaviour changed this morning and as her breakfast arrived a few minutes ago, she was reluctant to take it from the male- when she finally stood up we saw why: the egg tooth of the first chick was clearly visible breaking through the shell. The process of hatching can take many hours, so this is just the first stage- but BRILLIANT NEWS! Stay tuned for more updates. 11.30am Update: We have been getting tantalising glimpes of the first eggs hatching hole, where the chicks egg tooth has broken the shell.
3pm Update: We are still getting great veiws of the wee chicks beak as it slowly makes its way into the world. It is totally NORMAL for the hatching process to take anything up to 24hrs- in fact it is crucial that it happens slowly so the chick has time to detact itself from the eggs inner membrane safely as it dries out. We are unusally lucky to have such great close up cameras to detect this very early stage of hatching- at most nests these tiny signs are invisible and the hatching only becomes apparent at the very end stage. The first hole in the shell is crucial for allowing oxegen in and will gradually widen , before the egg cracks around to release the chick. Some people have asked if it will be ok as it isn’t being fed- the chick will survive this first 24hr period, as it did incubation- nourished by the nutrients stored in the yolk sack in the egg- one of natures cleverest designs.

Carly, do you have news about the third nest in Mississauga?
No I don't. The last I'd heard they still hadn't located a nest site, the falcons are there but it's not always easy to figure out where they are nesting..if indeed they are. We have several potential new sites this year but whether it's just new pairs actually nesting or just looking for a place to nest can be hard to determine and they have only a few people trying to cover a large area in the city and beyond. I remember how long it took them to find the Yonge and Eglington site where Stormin is now..we knew they were there but until one of the juvies landed on a balcony...they had not been able to locate the nest.
