Good grief!  I was afraid of this when Archer started two timing...your area is far too busy with falcons for him to be able to hold two territories for a long time.  With all the migrants you get coming through..I fear for him.  Really I do.
3948  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Question about females talking to their eggs on: 08-May-11, 01:18:48 PM
okay, i know this sounds weird, but it is said that human infants
can recognize their own mother's voice from others right after
they're born (been listening for months) maybe its the same principle
B talks to her eggs so they'll recognize her voice after they hatch
ok, ok, it's just an idea!!

Not weird at all, I truly believe that myself.
3949  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Question about females talking to their eggs on: 08-May-11, 07:15:18 AM
I wonder if perhaps she hears them in the eggs and is responding

Elk River Power Plant has sound on their cam and if you've never had the pleasure of watching that one...when the eggs get closer to hatching we've been able to hear the peeping from inside the eggs and the female responding.  This was the first cam I ever heard it on and was amazed by it.

This year the female(Mom, we called her as she was unbanded) has been lost 11 days into incubation and a new female, Dot has replaced her.  We're hoping for a new clutch shortly - but here is the link if you've never had the pleasure.

He might be in trouble then ...I know I've seen photos on other falcon sites of him incubating and coming in with food.  I don't watch this site but I've read about it and from what I read, he seemed to be pulling his weight.

Hmm...someone was likely in need of some coffee when they made that post.  Hopefully we'll find out today it was valiant they meant to say was born in Rochester.

What is it with Canadian males servicing two females????

Joyce

Checked on his background on the site and Rueben is/was an American born tiercel.   Maybe it's the Canadian beer  devil

The male at this nest site is named Rueben, and he is from the nest site at the Busch agricultural complex in Manitowoc, Manitowoc Country, Wisconsin. He was banded on May 9th, 2003, and has a black-over-green band on his left leg

They want to take his transmitter off as they've found it's delayed the return migration anywhere from 3 weeks to a month - hence the reason he's back late.  The females transmitter fell off she she has come home on time last year and this year.

He's been late two years in a row now and she keeps hooking up with this new guy and then Transmitter guy comes back and runs him off.  He was still in South America when the falcons started courtship.

I know he provided TR mom with food...she wasn't exactly receptive at first as she was still looking for Milton.  At first she chased him off and was quite aggressive with him.  It took a bit of time before she was comfortable letting him near her kids.  We know he brought her food and defended the territory for her and she let him land on the ledge near the kids eventually but she was leary about letting him get too close to them unless she was there.  She did most of the work with them and the fledge training etc.. but he definitely helped and he was quite respective of the space she kept between him and the kids.

Tiercels are pretty good about raising anothers offspring..likely as they are smaller and know the female could take them out they pretty much bow to the female.  I expect they also realize that helping with the kids will win the female over.

Actually it's Jack's third year with 2 females.  The first year though he didn't have offspring with TR Mom as she and Milton were about 3 weeks into raising their own brood when Milton was injured.  Jack and Angels' were in the middle of fledging when we noticed he was flying off in another direction for extended periods of time - he was wooing TR Mom and bringing her food to help with her single mom duties.
