I'm relieved he is in safe hands again.  He could have really hurt himself but now he will be given a chance to heal.  I'm sorry he won't be with his sister though..been a rough year for all of our falcons.

Glad the little guy is okay!  I hope he gets re-released soon to join his big sister  handshake

Okay...help!!  I have a bit more info on that Band ID. It's black green 8/?  Here is what Frank has posted and sent me.  Any help would be appreciated.  I searched the Midwest database but they all seem to have double digits.

Both Mark and I could clearly see the Black over Green band with a number 8 over N,M,H or the number 4. Our best possibly view was hampered by glare from the sun.

After losing Swoop, today mom Scout has been found dead.  Only Trooper and the recently fledged Spirit now remain  crying

I'm so happy to see these two are doing so well.  It's been an absolute pleasure watching them grow up and following all the daily posts, especially the witty commentary by all of you with the screen shots you post!  Honestly every day I come here to read about them puts a smile on my face!  2thumbsup

Still no ID on that new tiercel at Y&E but Frank thinks that black tape may have been put on by a rehabber not from fledge watch.  The reason being, he said the male has an old injury on his right wing and as a result it doesn't fully extend properly but he said it hasn't impaired his flying or hunting abilities.  Apparently he's quite the hunter!  So now we have Black/Green band on a Northern US tiercel that may have been in rehab and re-released.

I hope so too!

Apparently Warrior fledged sometime around 7 am this morning according to Elimac at CMNH.  They have been out looking for her now and waiting on C&C to update on her whereabouts.  I hope she is well and had a good first flight!

C&C have posted new photos of warrior and seneca.  Actually warrior looks pretty good, I think it's the bridge that makes her looks a bit ragged sometimes.  C&C will be out early today to check on her as in case she fledges they said, they also said her missing feathers shouldn't be a problem - and given they know their birds I trust their judgement.  Some beautiful shots up from yesterday!

I need to ask Mark about those missing feathers.  I know that the fact they are in sync with each other means she won't be off balance at least so that is good.  It's almost like a variation on Mariah's split wing, wonder if grandma had a similar issue when she was a young fledgling.

Donna, There was some sort of territorial scuffle here awhile back and eggs that had been laid were destroyed.  No one knows if it's the same female or a new one that is the mom of these.  Perhaps now with a fledge watch to come once the kids are older - they can identify who is there!

One of the fledglings at the new site did not survive after his rescue crying

!!! Sad news…good news.

Frank Butson Reports:

The good news is we did everything right and rescued 2 of young Peregrines. One was rescued successfully, but the impact suffered caused it to succomb to its injuries later. The ride home for the fledge watchers was very sombre. The other bird, the unbanded female was rescued after landing in a tree and eventually coming to the ground. She will be banded and released tomorrow.

We thought the day was done with the remaining to youngsters on the TTC building, but at after 9pm and 2 feedings, the female chick flew to the aentena atop the nest building. The male made a good flight and landed on the roof of the nest building.

In all a day of defeat and triumph. Sadly this is the reality of being a young Peregrine Falcon, life is not easy for them. Hazzards of fledging and later migration, result in a high mortality rate of 80% in their first year. Knowing we do our best to help the Peregrine Falcon beat the odds is what we have to look at. We are hoping for a much better day tomorrow.

Heartbreaking news, two fell off ledge today at various times.  Little Swoop did not make it  crying

 A Lot of Activity Today
Spirit (09/Y) was the juvenile that fledged this morning.

About 10 a.m. I received a call from Josh Williams from the Ohio Senate Office. He reported that a co-worker, Jason Phillips, noticed a peregrine just outside on a windowsill. He was able to give me the band number. The bird was not injured so I opted to capture her and place her back on the nest ledge. Thanks to Jason and Josh for taking notice and contacting me.

The capture happened without incident. I got back up to the 41st floor of the Rhodes Tower about 11 a.m. It is a bit tricky to put a falcon back out on the ledge when you know another fledgling is out there because you don't want to accidently cause the other bird to flush from the ledge. I looked out the door and saw Scout on top of the nestbox (squawking at full volume since she knew I was there!). At this point I had another potential danger: there was a chance that Scout would attack the bird as I put it back out. Scout wasn't about to leave so, I had to move slowly. I put Spirit in the doorway so she and Scout could see each other and simply closed the door. After a moment she hopped up on top of the nestbox with Scout. Mission accomplished successfully!

Fast forward to just after lunch. In the midst of trying to update the blog I got another call from downtown about a falcon on the sidewalk in front of the Rhodes Tower. Unfortunately this story doesn't end so well. It was Swoop (08/Y) and from reports it sounded like she was exercising on the ledge and then was gone from the ledge. Other accounts indicate she fell down to the ground with little or no flapping. As I have reported many times, flapping is instinctual so the fact that this bird came straight down would indicate there may have been another underlying issue. A necropsy will likely be done.

So, a busy day. Swoop's absence will be noticed much more by all of the fans out there watching than it will be by Scout and Trooper. They concentrate on what they see at the moment and so will focus all of their attention on Spirit. Hopefully she will be well fed and thus will wait to leave the ledge until she is good and ready.
