For those that followed the ZA pandas - Giant Panda Po has given birth to twins, the largest ever recorded apparently!  A boy weighing 211 grams and a girl weighing in at 209 grams!

Photos and video on iPanda Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/ipandacom/

ps:  Po was originally thought to be a boy but turned out to be a girl.  She is affectionately known as Bao Lan in China.

From Kate's Blog:  Remembering Louie: 2002 – 2019

In late June, after five young peregrines fledged from Pittsburgh’s Third Avenue nest, their father Louie was found dead at age 17. He was exceptionally old for a wild peregrine but longevity was in his genes.

Louie hatched in 2002, the son of Dorothy and Erie during their first successful year at the Cathedral of Learning. Dorothy fledged 43 young at Pitt before she disappeared at age 15.5.

Dorothy was the daughter of Sibella and Bill who were both part of The Peregrine Fund‘s Midwest Peregrine Recovery Program. Sibella nested at the First Wisconsin Building in Milwaukee through her 15th year. With a long-lived mother and grandmother it’s no wonder Louie made it to 17.

Louie started breeding early. In 2003 he was one year old when he won Pittsburgh’s Downtown territory. It was a tumultuous spring with two females and two males vying for the Gulf Tower nest. In the end Louie fought and killed Boris at the nestbox and became Tasha’s mate.

From 2003-2009 Louie fledged 24 young with Tasha. In her last breeding year he was especially protective of her on Banding Day.

The next year, 2010, was Louie’s chance to shine. In late March Dori defeated Tasha and became a first-time parent. Louie showed her the ropes as described in the links below:

-Tasha laid 2 eggs before Dori defeated her on 20 March 2010.
-Louie courted Dori at the nest (video) and kept his 2 eggs viable while Dori got in synch to lay 3 of her own.
-Once incubation began Louie lured Dori off the nest at night so that he could incubate: April 7 and April 8.
-In May, all five eggs hatched!

Louie was versatile. In their years together he and Dori moved their nest from year to year using three sites to fledge 39 young.

In 2012 they chose a cubbyhole on 3rd Avenue where they’ve nested 5 times. In 2015 they nested at Macy’s Annex. In 2014 and 2017 they returned to the Gulf Tower.

2018 ended sadly at Third Avenue when the Keystone Flats development was granted a Special Takings Permit and had their chicks removed. This year they were back at Third Avenue to raise and fledge five young. Louie was a good dad to the end.

All told Louie fathered 63 young peregrines. Like his mother Dorothy, Louie was the head of a dynasty.

Beauty's older brother Louie was found deceased yesterday, he was 17 years of age.  It's just a mention in this blog but Kate says she will do a tribute to him in a separate post.  He and his mate Dori (O'Connor's sister) produced 5 babies this year.

Beachville Nest banding day June 5th 2019
June 05, 2019 - International, National and Local News
Marion Nash Reports:
2 chicks banded successfully thanks to the great folks at Beachville Quarry and Carmeuse and CPF’s volunteer Master bander Anne Yagi.

There was 2 female chicks this year, good thing since we have had more boys than girls so far in 2019.

We were able to get a lift up to the nest thanks to the Beachville guarry’s lift operators extracted the chicks without issue band the chicks and get them back to Mom and Dad. Both chicks were a very good weight and were quite healthy. CPF Volunteer Lucie Kirchknoph assisted at the banding table for the first time and was very happy to have had the opportunity to help the birds she has been watching for so long.

here is the band information for 2019.

Female named Grace 909 grams Canadian black band Z over 42 Blue tape on the silver band
Female named Rosie 959 grams Canadian black band Z over 43 Red tape on the silver band

Hope they do well and stay aloft.

Details on the kids for Lucky and D'arcy :

3 boys 1 girl
June 04, 2019 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre
Marion Nash Reports:
We have 3 boy and 1 Girl

Thanks to Cathy Smith and Sky Reach Window Washing for extracting the chicks from the nest and for taking the wrath of Moma falcon while we band.

We had to rebook the banding to June 4th because of of an error in communication with the swing stage folks but thanks to Sky reach who quickly came this morning at 10:00 Am and set up the stage we were able to get the banding done today.

the chicks were in good health and very vocal. Management staff from the Bloor Islington Place brought out a ballot box so that guests watching the banding could name the chicks and I drew the 4 names.

Avro male band 01 over AW.
Griffon male band 02 over AW.
Aries male band 03 over AW .
Bliss ( Bloor/Islington) female band Z over 29.

Building management has been working hard to try to find the internet issue with the camera and have had both Bell and Rogers in to try to find the connection and issue but so far no luck. We discussed with them starting from scratch with a new internet line and connection so we hope we can get the camera up and running again soon.
537  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Offspring / Re: Aria - 85/BA (2016) on: 09-Jun-19, 07:50:28 AM
Aria and Indie did give up their last egg week before last.  They were then seen mating again and favoring a new ledge on one of the buildings at the complex.  Unfortunately the ledge they've chosen isn't visible to our watchers there as it's at the end of the same condo complex so there is no building next to it where you could go up and have a look across.

So we don't know if they've successfully reclutched or not but Marlene and Mathew are both keeping an eye on them when they can.  It's a really nice area where they are, that complex backs onto a golf course and then there is a river that runs by and a nice wooded area with walking trails.  So no nasty reflective glass.  There are a few mid-rises across the street from the front of the complex them for kids to fledge to which is nice as well.  It's very open and peaceful there.

Lucie and I are both in touch with M & M so if we hear anything we'll let you know.  For now, she is safe and she has a mate and a home  heart

!!! If at first you don’t succeed,, try , try again! A second clutch!! :-))
June 07, 2019 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages
Mark Nash Reports:
June 7th - 2019

Despite the fact that the pairs first clutch of eggs had earlier failed,,, there is no reason to stop trying,, and so it is for the Scarborough Milner nest pair!

Today’s check-in visit yielded some very good news indeed with presence of a second clutch of 4 eggs!!
Yeeee gads …. we’re going to doing fledge watches and bandingss all summer long!!!
Stay tuned, as it would seem that Linn and her mate is not quitters!!
