I sent the picture of MAK's find on her watch of 5/23 on to a friend, who shared it with another friend who is an avid birder and photographer. He thinks it may be a Northern Goshawk.    I just looked at some images and the head size, facial markings sure are similar as is the size.  In some images the chest is quite light.  What do you all think?

Look at the front egg and you tell me is this a pip?

What Paul said...though it does look more like in than out from this picture...

I agree...somthing is happening to that egg, but I don't think it's a pip.   Sad

BH and many others of us. Go to Paul Hamilton's post on the San Francisco peregrines thread of the forum. He just posted a lovely and timely post from a PeFa watcher out in San Fran by the name of Glenn.  It is appropriate for us at this time I think.

Beautiful sentiments expressed by Glenn; words that speak for every peregrine falcon watcher  across the world.  Ties in so well with what Ei said yesterday.  And thank you, Paul, for posting these moving thoughts.
Timely and well said.  Thank you.

I keep thinking of something Siobhan Ruck (anyone ever hear from her?) once said...if you look at it from the front and think white football, it's likely a red-tail.

And, although the colors are off-could be the background & the distance-the face looks very much like the bird on the right here...

That's Pale Male on the left with the second female from this season...

Good call, I think.  I've been looking at MAK's pictures all day.  It's out of proportion for a falcon - IMHO.
Your description of it "looking like a football"  certainly fits.  You have my vote.

thanx Fingers, toes and eyes crossed!  Grin
2funny

 ditto
YES!   What they said.  Everything crossed.  Just one hatch from Quest would be perfect for this first time pair.
Thank you CPF and Mark  Nash for posting.

Well put, Ei.  I think we all realize that this is new territory for us here.  There is also so much information to recall/assimilate in trying to make sense of this.   I  think I posted earlier today...somewhere ...that this probably happens in the wild as well, except there are no cameras to document it, and maybe we are too up close and  personal with our falcons.  As MAK said too, we have to let nature take its course.  Sometimes it is not what we  humans want, but there is still much to celebrate.  Look to Linn, and Rhea Mae, and Quest...although we haven't had an update about her in a bit.
Your "ramble" as you put it, was quite good!
1108  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Pictures from the Rfalconcam cameras on: 22-May-11, 03:10:57 PM
So if we are at day 39 or 40, there is still a slight window for the eggs to hatch?
1109  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: 2011 Egg Brooding Chart on: 22-May-11, 01:50:03 PM
Ei or ginha or Shaky -- is there an updated Brooding chart since the fight this week?  I'm curious to see that.  I imagine it will have definite changes.
1110  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Pictures from the Rfalconcam cameras on: 22-May-11, 01:36:09 PM
I looked it up and Seneca's baby hatched at 42 days but they said on the CMNH Forum that " Hilliard hatched at 44 days".  When hatches are close, don't the females usually spend most of the time on the eggs?  Another question- if the eggs become abandoned by A & B, will the DEC remove them to determine what is wrong?
I knew you'd have the answer.  Thanks.  So, this first egg was laid on April 1 or 2?  Second egg arrived on the 8th of April, and the third egg came pretty quickly after if I recall.    She has expended a lot of energy keeping these eggs warm and dry for these past....almost two months!   Perhaps our miserble weather is part of it too?
I think someone posted that just prior to hatch that Kaver would do more incubating duty at night.  Archer has certainly be spending a great deal of time on the eggs lately.  Why?  We don't know.  So many questions.

And I think we are all wondering if and when the DEC or another expert should perhaps be consulted.
Of course, out in the wild, unmonitored, these things happen as well.  It's just that we are so up close and personal in these falcons' lives.
