Hope Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul, And sings the tune--without the words, And never stops at all,
And sweetest in the gale is heard; And sore must be the storm That could abash the little bird That kept so many warm.
I've heard it in the chillest land, And on the strangest sea; Yet, never, in extremity, It asked a crumb of me.

Poor Beauty, she has had such a rough year. A rough couple of years! Her foot looks better - to my untrained eye at least. But the egg....Unity's and Archer's egg -- bless them both. It has been through so much, yet it appears to be intact. Last year, Beauty and Archer's eggs seemed to get soft and mushy until they discarded them....wasn't it in June? This early egg appears to be staying intact. Does anyone have any background with this type of situation? An egg...laid in March wasn't it? Late March? Goes through warmth, cold, snow, high temperature, then moderate, then high, back to cool. We have had such a range of weather since that egg was laid. I still remember the picture that Carol took of Unity and the Moon. I have it saved somewhere. So beautiful! If I remember correctly it was taken right around the time that Unity laid that egg? End of March? Or was the picture earlier in March? I know Donna will have it. Unity and the Moon is a beautiful picture.

William Osler Has a Hatch!!! June 06, 2012 - Etobicoke - William Osler Tracy Simpson Reports: I just received a phone call from Ross at William Osler Hospital and today the resident male Hurricane and his new mate Chessie have had a hatch!! The second egg is still in place and should hatch sometime over the next two days depending on when it was laid. This is fantastic news and we look forward to seeing the young ones!! Check back soon as more details and photos to follow. (She's considered a sub-adult and hers hatched) Poor Pigott Babies Seen Today!! - Frank Butson Reports:
Canada Square Peregrine report 20120605Two minutes after I arrived today Haven flew in from the south somewhere and made several lazy spirals over the black building, Canada Square and Yonge/Eglinton intersection before disappearing on the east side of Rio-Can. Five minutes later she flew in with a food parcel and today she stood on the edge of the ledge and fed her eyases. I saw one little head for a brief second before it was gone. Once she had finished feeding them she disappeared to the back of the nest and then flew to the RC building and perched 7 floors from the top. Twenty five minutes later Haven flew back to the nest ledge and ate some of the leftovers. Whilst she was busy eating I saw ONE HEAD AND ONE WING at the back of the nest. This is my first time seeing the youngsters active in the nest this year. Once she had finished eating Haven sat on the edge with her back to the sun. She did turn around for a few minutes but then turned her back on us again. Half an hour later, Haven flew off the nest to RC and perched, briefly, six floors from the top, before flying to the wall/upright at the nest. At7:24 pm Stormin put in an appearance from the east side of RC building, flying east a bit before turning around and flying west again to gain height to perch three floors from the top on the south face. I was not paying attention and missed Haven’s flight to RC but did catch her flight from that building and I saw her go into a stoop over the black building before disappearing. Shortly thereafter Haven flew from around 2180 Yonge and up the west side of that and the black building with a struggling bird firmly clasped in a talon. She perched seven floors from the top with the still squawking bird. It uttered a few peeps later on and then Haven *dispatched* it before plucking feathers from it and flying to the nest ledge where she once again perched on the edge and fed the eyases. This time I saw a whole head with gaping maw as Haven fed them! Once she had finished she flew to RC, perched briefly and flew to the wall/upright at the nest. Finally I saw two heads and some wings going through their exercises. I have been waiting for this for ages. Stormin put in a last and brief appearance before disappearing behind the RC and presumably going up Yonge. I saw one head and one wing and then I called it a day, leaving Haven perched on the wall. Lyn Forgive my ignorance...I really need a score care here, but why do I know the name Chessie? She is a newbie, but where did she hatch? I keep thinking Buffalo or Central Terminal? And Stormin. Isn't he related to the Rochester family tree? Can someone explain once again? I need a big family tree drawing! :-)

Just off camera, Quest is on the protruding bit of the ledge. I wonder if she's encouraging them out? (Giving us all heart attacks, is more like it!)
The way they were acting, I knew the bravest would go. It happens! :Be safe little ones. This is the ledge-walking phase for them; heart palpitations time for us!

Q & K Mira, the biggest and the loudest! Some more great pics by Ann B Wonderful, wonderful pictures by Ann. Thank you! Quest is breathtakingly beautiful! She is strong; you can see it in her pictures. I love that Mira was named for Mariah. Who selected the names? Harlequin people? They picked great names! They "sound" like Harlequin Romance novel names...."Blaze" "Amora" "Mira" ...love them. If only we would hear where little Harlie is now....

We were all saddened to learn of Unity's demise, especially since she was one of our "graduates," but in her honor, one of the two females who hatched from the nest of Belle and Allen this year was given the same name. (There were two males as well.) So who knows who may once again swoop in from western skies... We're still working on getting a fal-cam here at U of Toledo, but here's the helmet-cam view of what Ohio Division of Wildlife employees saw prior to the chicks' banding. Belle, of course, is mounting the most fierce attack. The video's gone viral and was even picked up by Right This Minute News: http://www.rightthisminute.com/video/researchers-brave-falcon-attacks-scienceHow wonderful that one of Belle's offspring is being named Unity! This video is awesome. Those birds don't mess around. They hit the wooden shields, and hit the hard hat wearing person! They do protect their young.
