661  Member Activities / Vacations and Holidays / Re: **Happy Labor Day* on: 05-Sep-11, 04:53:01 PM
Labor Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September (September 5 in 2011) that celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers.

Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer. In high society, Labor Day is (or was) considered the last day of the year when it is fashionable for women to wear white. Put your whites away ladies!

In U.S. sports, Labor Day marks the beginning of the NFL and college football seasons. NCAA teams usually play their first games the week before Labor Day, with the NFL traditionally playing their first game the Thursday following Labor Day. The Southern 500 NASCAR auto race was held that day from 1950 to 1983 in Darlington, South Carolina. At Indianapolis, the National Hot Rod Association hold their finals to the U.S. Nationals drag race.

In the U.S. most school districts that started summer vacation in early to mid-June will resume school near this day (while schools that had summer begin near Memorial Day will have already been in session for about 3 weeks)

Happy Labor Day all! Fall will be here soon,  the birds will be ready for Migration, time to cover the pools, there will be more traffic on the roads and it's one step closer to my favorite Holiday...

It also means while Archer's gone, Beauty must do all the repairs at the nest....(or Shaky)!

I noticed that it was Labor Day, but not sure what it was. Thanks Donna for explaining.
And about Fall will be here soon, I'm still waiting for the Summer.
greetings Aafke

I'm still waiting for summer too!   LOL.    Labor Day is the official "end of summer"   and "back to School"  weekend. (I still refer to Sch... as the "S" word, and Fall as the "F" word...not uttered before at least September 5th :-)).    That's why I like MAK's sunrise pictures so much...as pretty soon we are in the depths of the dark;  or driving into it at 6 am in the morning!   So Aafke, keep the flowers growing as long as you  can, and keep waiting for summer!

Tears in my eyes as I read the quote.  Something to keep in mind.  Well said, Paul

Only 2 more weeks until the start of the High Falls Greentopia Festival.

http://greentopiafestival.com/

In addition to the festival, there is now talk of a new park at High Falls, The GardenAerial.

http://www.gardenaerial.org/

I wonder if it will get further than the Broad Street Corridor plan.

http://www.broadstreetcorridor.com

A little cynical there?    As soon as I saw this, I thought of the High Line in NYC.  The same idea!  The High Line has done well for the area of lower Manhattan where it's located.   Could an aerial garden bridge do the same for ROC?  I think that's what the High Falls was supposed to do many years ago...so i understand the  cynicism.    It's worth a look  Look at what the Broadstreetcorridor plan did!  :-)

Just FYI, I've just emailed our camera guy to see if he can zoom in on the upper ledge. I think it's Harlequin....

Nope...Quest. Sigh...will we ever see Harlequin again?

Her breast feathers looked dark, which is why I thought it was Harlequin. I guess she's molting.

Harlie's probably out on her new life adventures but it's always good to see Quest!

Yes, I agree..it is always good to see Quest.  Since we have been following her since she was an "egg" here in Rochester,   her adventures fascinate me.  I think I want to be a falcon!   Her story is wonderful, and I would love to see Harlequin, but I am overjoyed to see Quest up close and personal,  and I hope she will stay around for the winter months!   Just as much as I would love to see Beauty and Unity stay around for our winter months!       The girls stay around!

Kendal at nestbox now at 2:50pm.
it is funny how alpha male he looks, he always has that very cautious look on his face, looking around checking out every possible threat and potential meal that is visible from his guard point.
kind of different from pretty boy archer.

They are very differnent aren't they?    Young Kendal was the model mate/parent/protector this season, and I do hope that we get to see Kendal and our Quest have more young next spring!    Archer?  That is another story.  It has been a soap opera with him since the day he arrived on the scene...or at least it seems that way to me.  :-)

This is the disheveled look that I was talking about!  laugh

Nah...it is just "the wind beneath her wings".    Grin

Cool

Love the pics from the cam this time of year.  Always love them. I think it must be the angle of the sun, or maybe just the thought that this is the last of the sun we will see for the next nine months  :-(

wave Beauty is molting too Jeanne!  Grin

Sure is! She's looking a little disheveled lately.

Me too, I must be molting also!  secret2

What a coincidence!  Me too!   lol

I'm not alone!!  clap

Talk about having a sense of oneness with the animals we watch-- now we are all molting Wink

Oh no..I am molting too!
673  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Offspring / Re: Quest and Kendal - Toronto/Don Mills on: 29-Aug-11, 04:57:51 PM
Is Quest losing feathers?

I think is is molting season for many birds, Jeanne.  Even my own Doc-bird is molting!
674  Anything Else / Totally OT / Re: Hurricane Irene on: 29-Aug-11, 02:11:19 PM
Who would have thought that Irene could cause such damage in the Catskills and upstate?  The coastal areas were bracing, and the inland areas in NY, PA, and NJ sustained great damage.  Those pictures are awful!

I tried without success to upload the photos and captions from iPhoto to an album in my premium Kodak Gallery http://classic.kodakgallery.com/shaky

However, Carrie was able to upload the photos to a regular Kodak Gallery album and then type in the captions again. Here is the link. No login required.

EDIT: I updated the link.

Looks like a once-in-a lifetime trip!  Thank you for sharing wonderful pictures!  You certainly did a lot in two weeks!   WOW!
