Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Falcon Watching Boring? :-)

Boring? Falcon Watching? Nah. If watching these falcons for hours on end, sitting, flying, sitting, eating, sitting, copulating, sitting, sitting, sitting & more sitting. You get the idea. Lots and lots of sleeping. It is not all action. Although that is mostly what would be reported in a Watch Report, if there was any. All the Rochester Watchers watch these birds out of love and respect and admiration. Many Watchers do not report onIt the board, don't even have a computer. Other Watchers will report for them if possible. I & others report all our sightings. I don't have much time to post official reports, like I used to and I'm really glad that MAK does. So who thinks that Falcon Watching is boring? Not me! Carol, you and MAK, and Joyce and Brian and so many others are the mainstay of these reports. Your reports are NEVER boring, and for all of us out here --- keep them coming.

If she seems to be eating and pooping okay, and is not listless, maybe there are only two eggs. If she is not sitting on the eggs, try removing them. I could always tell by Winnie's abdomen and vent area if she was going to lay again. If she gets listless and all fluffed up, you may want to check with a vet.
Do you weigh Chewey? I learned early on the best sign of a bird's health is its weight. I bought a kitchen gram scale when Doc was a baby, and got them used to being weighed when they were babies. It became a natural part of their lives. If I suspected Winnie was going in to egg laying mode, I'd weigh her and it always confirmed that eggs were coming. Her entire life, she weighed 118 grams, but in egg laying mode, her weight would go up to 140-142 grams. If Chewey seems bigger than normal, or is still eating "like a pig" she may still be in egg laying mode. I still weigh Doc bird just to keep an eye on his health, and he maintains 138 grams most of the time.
So good luck with Chewey.

We all do,too, Carol. Do you think the sky battle you saw yesterday morning was an intruding PeFa...maybe Mariah, or do you think it was U and B and that's why B laid low yesterday?

Majesty is Cabot-Sirocco's (Mariah's first mate) sister. Just to tie this to the Rochester Falcons. This is great. I love that they care so much for "their" Falcons, especially the young man who does the talking. I would love to meet him and shake his hand. I'm so glad that they were able to capture her and take off her band and treat her injury. When Mariah injured her foot so badly, I was so happy that she was unbanded. Good job to all involved! I know enough to know that this is good!

Salt Lake City Peregrine Falcons Necropsies results for Bird# 1 Amelia and Bird #2 Sally: "There was no sign of infectious disease in either bird. The lab saw evidence that both birds suffered from a huge fall. Bird# 1 had a ruptured crop that led to a bacterial infection and a bruised heart. Bird # 2 was extremely emaciated and the crop/intestines were completely empty. She also had a contusion on the top of the head attributed to a large fall.†How very sad for both. Fly free, little Amelia and Sally.
