!!! Some sad news about Kate just in this morning!
July 25, 2011 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
CPF Postmaster Reports:

Monday July 25th - 2011 - 11AM

We have only just received some bad news from Toronto Wildlife this morning regarding little Kate from the Toronto Sheraton nest site. In a telephone call this received this morning, we are told that Kate passed away early Saturday morning in her sleep.

While the results of the blood work that was done for blood parasites came back negative and the serious of chest x-rays didn’t show any real clear evidence of Aspergillosis,, Aspergillosis is highly suspect given her condition. She was very much underweight and simply had no energy or fire as we say. The young birds are especially vulnerable as they have yet to develop strong immune systems to fight off all of the usual nasty ailments they are exposed to while they are still growing and developing.

To explain Aspergillus in short:
Aspergillosis is a respiratory disease of birds caused by the fungus Aspergillus, which is found almost everywhere in the environment.
A. fumigatus is the most common species of the fungus to cause disease, although A. flavus, A. niger, and others can also cause problems. Aspergillus grows readily in warm and moist environments. The microscopic spores of the fungus become airborne, poor ventilation, poor sanitation, dusty conditions, and close confinement increase the chance the spores will be inhaled.

Usually, the fungus does not cause disease, however, if a bird does not have a healthy immune system, it can cause illness. Predisposing factors include other illnesses, stress, poor nutrition, poor husbandry or unsanitary conditions, another injury to the respiratory system (e.g.; airborne pollutants).

The combination of the number of spores in the environment and the presence of predisposing factors determine which birds are most at risk of disease.

Aspergillus is everywhere; it grows on everywhere, including on living tissue. Every speck of dust and dirt has spores of at least one species of Aspergillus. A bird does not usually succumb to the disease when it has a strong immune system. Over time it has built up antibodies strong enough to wage a proper war against the spores. But, a weakened immune system or ingestion of a huge amount of spores is what causes this disease. Every animal with lungs breathes in thousands of Aspergillus spores every day.

The spores cannot grow in the lungs of a healthy body, but a diseased lung can easily become a host. Aspergillosis can consume a bird with a weakened immune system. Poor nutrition, another illness, anxiety, loneliness, old age, unsanitary conditions or disturbed soil can also bring on this illness. A constant and gradual exposure can create a chronic (long term) infection and the causes are all too commonly found in places you would never expect.

Given the hot dry conditions we’re been having, this is an ideal environment for the airborne spores to spread around in the dry air.

We are truly saddened to receive this news this morning, and it’s very nice to see that little Cinnamon (another one of the Toronto Sheraton juveniles that we believed might not have made it given his small size and underdevelopment) that he is going strong today!!

This is very very sad. Poor Kate, I'm so sorry RM and Tiago. They do have 2 healthy ones out there, little Cinnimini and Sunshine.

Poor, poor   Kate.  And little William, who went before her.  I hope this does not portend  anything for the royals in the UK.

I do  mourn the passing of Kate -- of whom I had a bad feeling after her last "to ground" the other day. So sad.   Fly free, little Kate.

I am sad tonight.

Donna - i am just catching up after work.  Congratulations conure grandma!. If I may share.   In 1990, I received a gorgeous Sun Conure whom I named Winnie-bird.  She was only 6 weeks old and  I had to hand feed and keep her alive.    In April of 1995, my Winnie got fat and started eating like a ....I don't know what.  I took her to Dr. Balonek...Ask Dana.   He told me she probably had fatty liver disease and that we "were killing our birds with our diet.".    The very next day my Winnie bird laid her first egg.    I did my homework starting in 1995.   She was five years old and she laid an egg that first year every three days until she had three.  Long story short.   My Winnie was very fat and happy and comfortable.      SHe had a "Companion"  -- a Gold cap conure, "Doc Bird"  who just turned 22 this past June 2011.   Doc bird is still fat and happy and spoile......and male (If I may add!).

Winnie  laid about 150 eggs in her short life.  From 1995 until  March 28, 2008, when she died  in my hand, Winnie laid  150 eggs.     None were fertile.  But every egg was  laid in a clutch of three or four.   After the first egg, the second would come the third day, and the third -- three days after that.  I learned much about our conures and their egg laying habits.

They can suffer seizures from calcium deficiency, and can also become egg bound.   My WInnie saw many vets and many vets saved her life on more than one occasion.      I can't even begin to express my thanks to  all of the people who helped me  with WInnie.

If you conure has just started laying eggs, believe me, it is only the beginning.

Winnie bird was hatched in 1990, began laying eggs in 1995, and laid  150 eggs right up until 2008, when she died of heart disease  on March 28, 2008.   If you have a good vet, please keep up with him/her.  If you need information, please contact me as I know a wonderful avian vet who can help.

Egg laying takes much out of our conures, especially the older ones -- as it sounds like your Chewey may be.  I may be able to help.

Great video and spectacular flying by the juvies  Was that the voices  of the juvies we heard on the video.
I would love to see that video next  to  some video footage of the Blue Angels -- who were in our skies last week.   That would be cool.

Seeing this post about Courtney coming to ground reminded me of Kate last week.  She came to ground again, and I think she was being taken some where for observation.  Did I miss some post about her, or do we not know her condition?  Any information about Kate?

It was nice to have someone to watch with in the early morning again. Dan took this season off with no babies to watch. I think it worked out fine for Ei to come for watchers weekend anyway. Yesterday she saw some great stuff in Buffalo and though they weren't around a whole lot for her she did see Beauty and Archer. And Unity as well. Have a safe trip my falcon watching friend and we'll see ya next time you roll into town!  wave
 foxbinocs

Nice to meet you, Ei. At least I  now know to whom I am speaking when I post here  wave

I would love to join the four of you on your journeys, but I cannot due to work.  I did enjoy meeting Ei for the first time in person today, as well as ginha and dave and Susan.   It's nice to be able to put a name and face together.   And, ginha, I win  the IDIOT award -- as I got lost and a 13 mile trip became a 23+ mile trip.
To be able to see not only Ei, and MAk, and  and Carrie and Shaky and Joyce and Jeanne again, but to sit in and  see all those raptors at Wild Wings -- WOW!l.   I hope that all of you who took pictures will post, as I did not take pictures, and there were some great shots taken.
Nice to see all of you  today. I enjoyed my day with you and the raptors at WW and Terry did a magnificant job.   You can tell she loves her job and her birds.
I hope that you have a great trip to Buffalo and Ei enjoys her time here.

This was a wonderful report to read from Mark Nash.    Hopefully, we can track this beautiful little family for time to come...even if Quest's transmitter soon falls off.    And with Harlie's celeb status, perhaps others will notice her!

Not too late. See you then, Susan.

I am "seeing "all of this as I read Mark Nash's report about our  Toronto family.
I am "seeing" Mariah as I read the reports of Quest and Kendal, and Harlie's wonderful flying lessons.
Sounds like Harlequin has a whole bunch of devoted watchers keeping track of her.  Sounds like Quest is some "mama".    And she trained Kendal well!   happy

Sad Brian has informed me that he won't be able to make it to Wild Wings with us tomorrow.

Oh phooey!   Sad Well, give him my phone #...if he changes his mind all he has to do is call.  Maybe I'll get to see him at some point during the weekend.

So, furnace guy has finally left the building...a few more things & I'll be hitting the road.  I won't be getting there too awful late after all!  No fancy internet phone, so I'll be a bit out of touch, but I do have tweets enabled on my phone, so I'll be able to get the latest news of who's where!

Later!

Safe trip, Ei!
