Don Mills - Harlequin soars in the sky

At the Toronto Don Mills location many of us were treated to some great flying by Harlequin.  She was soaring in the sky.  Moving from building to building.

The best part for me was when Quest fed her on the ledge.  Makes you remember Harlie is still a young falcon.

I ' ve always had to work -- at least for the past five years -- so I've missed Falcon watchers weekend.

I will be joining you all on Friday!!!  The chickadees are awesome!  Dan S, our longtime watcher, sometimes will hide the peanut in the other seeds so that the chickadees stay longer on his hand as they search!

Oh good, I think I also met you, jeanne, last year . I am looking forward to it on Friday!

Oh wow, now she picks at it. Must be itchy after 3 years....like a cast. We had 3 very very good years of tracking her. Wonder if she and Kendal will stay the Winter or move around. I'm sure he's thinking right now where to go, (on his own), with all that nagging she's doing. Maybe he's having 2nd thoughts!! I would.

Not itchy - it is time.  It served it's purpose and gave us a very, very special gift.  Now it is time for Quest to fly solo without us.

It is a poignant moment for all of us who have followed Quest since she was an egg.   That transmitter has allowed us to share her life, and to follow her escapades and adventures, and finally to share her "Harlequin Romance" moment with Kendal and little Harlequin.   It has been a privilege -- I've said that before. 
I'm happy that she will be a "freebird"  and lose that transmitter, but I think she will stick around her chosen site as her mother did, so  we will be able to keep track of Quest, and Kendal if he comes back after winter break.  Harlequin -- she will be the one we will wonder about.   Maybe she will settle down in Rochester!
And Archer will have three females in town !   Anyone untangle that family tree ?  :-)

A quick spot check this morning around 11:30a.m., One adult on the north east corner of the Hilton Hotel, one juvenile on the inner penthouse area of 150 York St. and a quick look on the nest ledge and ITâ€�S CINNAMON! He made his way back on his own! Good to see him, he is a small little male and is still as cute as ever.  Did not see the third, probably Sunshine, who I assume is off on her own until dinner.

Good to see report on little Cinna-mon.  There are so many falcons to keep track of in Toronto -- and so many of them have roots here in Rochester.   It  is fun, but gets mind-boggling at times   

OK-here's the plan so far...I'll pick up Brian & MAK and we'll meet whoever can come at Wild Wings around 10:30 Friday morning!  I'll have baggies, a sack of sunflower seeds & a jar of unsalted peanuts (blood pressure won't allow salted anymore) in the car for anyone who wants to try some chickadee feeding! 

I will meet you there at 10:30 on Friday - also bringing unsalted peanuts and sunflower seeds and lots of water for us humans!

 I feel like a total perch potato compared to you watchers!

 Did Diamond and her  unbanded? male self-select this site?  This is a natural ledge, and not a nest box  that was  in place to attract falcons?  Is that correct?  
A beautiful setting, but these little butterballs are late aren't they?   When will they fledge?  
I know they were moved, but am unsure of WHY they were moved?  

 

Margaret they are indeed late. John S. (the official watcher and photographer for the site) told Joyce and I when we were there on Sunday that they expect them to fledge in about 8-10 days. He will contact Joyce when they do and we will be going back to check them out!    

It is a gorgeous setting for the falcons.  
Did you ever think, MAK, when you signed up last year to watch the falcons, that you'd be going "international"?  Last year Rochester, this year, Canada --next year? The WORLD!  

Heck no Margaret! When I signed up I didn't even know if I'd be able to do Rochester with the limitations I have. I owe my going "international" to my friend and fellow falcon watcher Joycie! She has been very good to me and I thank her so very much!!!  I'm sure I'll never be able to afford to go overseas but you just never know!  As far as the setting goes I guess it doesn't get much better than Niagara Falls one of the wonders of the world!

It has been quite a year!  And I'm envious of the year you have experienced with the falcons!    So ya neva know!    Next thing you'll be reporting from the falcons that fly to winter in Chile, S.A.!     (As opposed to Chili, NY)    LOL.

Hey Margaret.  Sage told Dana and I that where the eyases were moved to, is the old nest site that the Tiercel used before.  When Diamond arrived last year, she didn't like that spot and chose a new one.  It is a beautiful setting to Watch from Terrapin Point.

So far it seems that we Harlequin employees haven't been needed for the official fledge watch and it seems that Harlequin is such a fast learner, with terrific parents, that I may never have to use my towel swishing skills to pick her up off the ground!

No matter whether you would be needed for the offical fledge watch, I am sure all of us really appreciate yours and your fellow Harlequin employees efforts  in taking part.
It is great to have you here to give us first hand info, especially for the benefit of those of us who so much would like to be there for a longer period of them but can't.

...or for those of us who can't be there at all!  Wonderful report, KAT.    Quest learned from the best -- her mom, Mariah.  Keep us posted!
