Nest check at CT this am found Gleig   falcon doing fly-bys and touch 'n goes which thrilled the screaming girl  surprise  but the other kept falling asleep.   Both escapees are using the nestbox as a shade umbrella.  This means they cannot get out as far as they could on the perches.  Not sure if the box isn't mounted a bit too high for them to jump back in.  Fledging by the weekend I expect!

Connie agrees the UB fledges should still be doing well and starting to go beyond OUR comfort zone. Smiley. And the CT baby also should be okay down there.  I remember seeing Quest's baby, first year, on the ledge and I was going nuts, but it got back in the box.  Smiley. Wait til the Rochester baby jumps out!!!   scared blue

Central Terminal - One of the babies escaped the nestbox and is now happily on the ledge below!  See her to the left under the box?

CT Fledge watch begins officially July 12, unoffically now!   scared blue

Also, if anyone is shuffling off to Buffalo this weekend, please contact me, as we are trying to get enough watchers to circle the fledge area and account for three fledges!  Odd reports received lately of Pefa hit on Winspear.  I think one report was a pigeon, the other old news of Athena being recirculated.  Carl did find a black hair extension on gutter area of Winspear at MacKay.

Problem is, we cannot account for all three fledgings around campus, at VA or water tower.   I have contacted DEC, SPCA, Buffalo Police, Campus Police, asked MacKay neighbors, etc.  Nothing has been reported.  But we still can't be sure of three fledges at once.  Sad

So, for any looking for something to do this weekend...

News of our 2010 Statler fledge, named "Statler" as she was the only one banded because bankruptcy court denied the DEC access to Statler nestsite.  "Statler" however got rescued from the street and then banded before she was released from the top of City Hall.  She is now nesting in Kitchner, Ont.

hahaha!  Carl had a wonderful weekend!  I think we have an avid new pefa fan!   wub2

These two little girls will be glad to entertain pefa watchers for the next few weeks, then thrill you when they exchange the safety of the nest box for that big world outside!  Our Rochester friends have been up close and personal during watches, searches and rescues!  Dana got to return one to a roof!

Note to Carl: This is the time of year to have a blanket or large towel, leather gloves, spray bottle of water in a rescue box in your vehicle!   And the DEC phone numbers: Buffalo numbers - Peregrine Falcons and other raptors - Call DEC 716-851-7010 to report Peregrines in trouble or 800-847-7332 for a DEC Officer.   Wink

Special receiver has arrived which may be able to pick up a "mortality signal", depending...

At this point, our hearts are just broken, nine days with no verifiable sightings of  heart Athena, heart our UB transmitter girl.

The other UB fledglings are doing great, so this is good.  Their main playground today was above the roofs of the VA Hospital.  They were playing talon-tag and being closely watched by BB and Yankee.  We watched them from VA property though we did not lift our cameras, as that gets us thrown off the property.  They are very strict there and of course these days, they scan the areas constantly from inside via their security cams, plus many guards outside.

For our Rochester friends who are coming to Buffalo, be sure not to park in the VA parking area on the UB side of the street.  There will be plenty of other spots open on the weekend.

Cameras are not allowed.  Cell service is blocked inside even for texts(!)  Firearms are not allowed, which is not surprising, but when you stop to think about, most of the patients are patients as a result of guns, bombs, etc.  Roll Eyes

Couldn't get to the sites today.  Watched the antics on cam when BB dropped off a prey item for the three kids in the box.  They fought each other for the black bird, starling?, dragged it around, Athena hopping around  madly and finally they all gave up.  None knew how to self-feed from a whole, un-prepped prey item!  BB then came back and fed the voracious little ones.
The previously fledged kid apparently stayed the day and didn't want to fledge again!  Ken sent me a pic of BB looking at him from her perch on Kapoor today,  and it was rather silhouetted, so I played with it in Photoshop and here is our great mama pefa!

Plus!  The names the DEC submitted officially are Athena and Andromeda for the girls and Phoenix and Aires for the boys.  I do not have the colors or band numbers yet.

I cannot get back to UB tonight   crying  foot not working and too much pain.  In jammies.  Roger says thunderstorms tonight and it's getting windy.  Hang on babies!

So much excitement in Canada right now!  And we're watching Yankee, an previous Niagara Gorge hatch and his mate BB, watching out for their brand new fledges at University of Buffalo!

Good luck to all the new fledges out there!
