Rich knows where this is!

As do I...  Spent quite a bit of time on that section when I lived just a few miles from there.  My Son remembers it when it was a two-lane road...

MAK, I will ask my sister re seeds for the Moon Flowers... they should be at that stage now. She is north of the city, so who knows re the soil, but you could try. I think hers is quite sandy. Anyone else?? I think once they get going, the GO!

I will probably have a dozen or so of the little spiky balls to share, email me off list to confirm  happy

Carla, thanks I thought the moonflower was  from the Ipomoea family

http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maanbloem

(it's a Dutch site)

now I will look for the Datura.
greetings Aafke

I was totally confused as well  ...http://10000birds.com/the-moonflower-ipomoea-alba.htm
I used to plant these, and wondered why my neighbor had perennial bush ones  ???
The Annual vine ones attract the Hummingbird Moth, a most interesting creature...

Hi Annie,

I love the pictures of your moonflowers.
It looks to me as the datura innoxia .I saw them in spain a couple of years ago and I took a seedball.I have tried to grow them. But I'm not patient enough and it didn't work.I have also ordered them by marktplaats/market place , where people try to sell all kind of things. But no luck.Datura/Brugmansia is one of my favorits.

Greetings Carla

I had not been familiar with the Datura Innoxia, but a friend who has extensive gardens gave me a little piece of one, and it has become a rather large bush :-)  Many flowers every night, and now those spiny balls :-)
I have also grown Brugmansias, but they are really not happy being brought inside for the winter.  And having to keep them isolated from the cats is no fun either.

There is a report that one person was trapped in the crane. No other details released so far.

That is not good.  Generally when that happens, the operator is trapped.  I hope this one is different.

I was in the outside garden cashier booth at Home Depot, and neither felt, heard, nor saw anything.  People inside the store, however, said stuff moved a bit.  This is in the Eastern Panhandle of WV, about 50 miles NW of DC.  No damage here that I've heard of.  I feel deprived, having totally missed it where I was, at work.

145  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: So, What Does Everyone Think about the Rochester Falcons Situation? on: 10-Aug-11, 10:27:46 PM
When I worked at the accounting firm, I had the Kodak camera feed on in the background all day, it was my stress relief.  I shed tears on my desk when Mariah was hurt and still taking care of her babies, and Kaver was taking care of them all.
Now, I don't have that access at work, but I do read all the posts, it's just not the same size part of my day.  However, I must say that the *people* here are as big a draw to me now as the soap opera actions of the Falcons.  WE will never know what became of Kaver, but since Mariah was banded, at least we may someday know her fate.  Meanwhile, we can follow some of her descendants, which is great too...

Many years ago, I used to go every year to a two day Cat Show in Portland, Maine.  On the Saturday night, some of the members of the club sponsoring the show would have a real downeast clambake, featuring Lobsters, Steamed Clams, corn, etc., all cooked in the proper pit in the ground.  Many of the guests were, of course, city folks unfamiliar with the "Big Red Bugs".  They would rip off the claws and eat that meat, and just leave the rest on their plates.  My Friend (and cat fancy mentor) Alison and I graciously offered to clean up the tails for them  devil

We have a very active wasps' nest in the shed - I do not go in there... I send Rod. Stood on a wasps' nest as a child and am therefore a tad wary of these critters.

So here's the thing: We do NOT want to just kill them - esp if they are useful as pollinators, predators etc. But we would like to get them out of the shed. Not sure of the species, but they make those amazing "paper" nests, all spun around and symmetrical.

Does anyone have sound, practical information and advice for us?

Thanks so much!!

Slainte!

Paper Wasps and Honeybees are not at all the same animal  surprise
The advice about waiting 'til they are all inside is a good idea.  Be prepared to get inside a secure structure immediately if you mess with them.
Yes, those nests ARE impressive!

It has occurred to me that Perhaps Wild Wings uses the proceeds from the sale of $1.00 nuts and seeds toward maintenance of the residents, in which case bringing one's own might be considered in marginal taste.  If I were fortunate enough to be able to join you all there, I think I would plan on purchasing theirs as long as they have it, before bringing my own.  Others' mileage may vary :-)
