I wonder if he ever worked at RG&E, the local pare company. As you know, their Beebee station is not too far from the Kodak tare.

Oh, my. Look at the hare. It's past my bedtime.

Regional dialects are very interesting.  Once upon a time I worked as an oversize load escort driver and ran into all sorts of accents on the CB.  One that I always found interesting was the very blurry line between a true down-east Maine accent and what is often thought of as classically Canadian.  Not much difference between Eh-ya?  and Eh?

Anyway...I ran across this very interesting map and pronunciation guide done as a hobby.

http://aschmann.net/AmEng/

All sorts of fascinating tidbits if that's your sort of thing...like there's a correlation between a New Orleans accent and a Brooklyn accent.  Go figure!

Aaah, but the Maine (and New Hampsha) expression is AY UH  Wink

I am rarely stumped by a regional pronunciation, but I have to say I was totalled by the guy who asked me (at my post as Home Depot Garden Cashier in WestbyGod Virginia), where the flares were.  I dutifully replied that they were in Aisle ten, the safety aisle.
Seems the chap was looking for FLOWERS.

I suspect we're reading only a small portion of the greedy wholesale slaughter in the oceans.  crying This particular fish got me to wondering ... on the Jersey shore where I spent my childhood summers, these fish were called "stri ped" bass (2 syllables). Is that the common pronunciation everywhere else? My uncle used to tell a story about uncovering a German spy in their midst during World War II when the spy said he was from Forked River NJ (pronounced as the 2-syllable "For ked River" but the spy said it as a one syllable word, so my uncle knew that this person wasn't really from that area.

Dot in PA

That fills in a bit of info for me...  In Northern New England, where I grew up, Stri ped had two syllables, ie: a Stri ped T-Shirt, or a Stri ped Cat.
When I got to Virginia, people looked at me funny when I said it that way, so I guess the boundary is somewhere not too far South of New Jersey  Wink

Ahh the good ole days and yes the least amount of excitement was the most exciting. When we were young, our excitement was hearing the freight trains whistle in the distance, running as fast as we could, 1/4 mile, just to see it and count the 50 plus cars that steamer pulled. They were the best of times.

So like what I used to do as well...  Loiter on the way home, then hear the whistle and beat feet back to the crossing  happy

Well, here in Ulster County, NY there seems to be bands of snowmaggedon and icepocalypse...a lot of staff have called out due to the weather.  Funny thing is the staff who made it in have all said the roads aren't that bad-myself included (although I did stay over nearby last night).  So I'm waiting to see the news reports where these pockets of 3 feet of snow and 6 inches of ice happened, cause no one I've spoken to this morning has seen it.  Amazing how when we offer to come pick them up it's suddenly some other excuse.  It's health care, people.  You knew you needed to plan for bad weather when you got into the business.

Can you tell I'm a little crabby this morning?

Ei

Sounds like a few weeks ago here in the Shenandoah Valley area.   The manager of the Home Depot where I work (my "retirement" position...) called me on a day off to see if I could come in because he'd had several callouts due to the snow.  Maybe three inches.  I had plans so couldn't do it, but I asked him what kind of wusses we had there anyway.  Turns out that a couple of stupid motorists had done stupid things on a couple of the (many) hills out there, and the roads were blocked for hours.  Those people really *couldn't* get out.

Some old Macs can still be useful. We have 2 working 24/7 to  provide streaming video from the Times Square building. If you know of anyone replacing a 2006 or newer Mac that's still in good condition, let me know. (Of course, why would anyone replace a 2006 or newer Mac in good condition?)

Read your blog, MAK - wow! On Tuesday, I will be the proud owner of a new Mac, so will look forward to viewing your video. I am sure your narration is full of excitement!

(Poor old Big Mac - he has been such a faithful servant, but I fear the wee lad is tired now. Sure hope the new one lets me log on!!)

Not sure how (or IF) it works in Ireland, but I understand Apple has a program whereby you can turn in your old Mac, and whatever it's worth as salvage, they will give you a credit toward a new one, and give the old one a decent burial at least.  My Cube is ten years old now, and at some point I may have to consider a successor, sigh...

Try this one.

When my sisters and I were little kids, we had a View Master viewer and LOTS of reels for it.  One had exotic animals on it, and one of them was a Coati Mundi.  For some reason, I was afraid of it, I have no idea why, they're actually pretty cool, and some people keep them as pets.

Thanks, Donna!

The Latin Mass was still on the go when we were kids (speaking of understanding...). My brothers and sisters and I used to think the Agnus Dei (Agnus Dei, qui tolis pecatta mundi...) was actually saying:

"Are you staying? We call this a koatamundi..."

Religion was not our strong point.

Do dvds from the UK work in the US?

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters
No, because the two countries are in different DVD regions, and because the U.S. uses NTSC television systems and the U.K. uses PAL.

yes, but only on a region free dvd player and a TV that supports PAL standard. PAL dvd will play on any computer, as long as the region coding on the dvd reader is not fixed to region 1.   silly

My Sister lives in Italy, and says they require "Region 2" format, OR some sort of universal format, for DVDs.

Wondered how long that would take. Thanks, Ei!

The only Baseball game I ever attended in person was a Twi-Night Double Header at Fenway Park.  The visiting team was Detroit, and the Red Sox won both games.  The second one went to thirteen innings, and we didn't get out of there til nearly 2AM.  I sat a few rows back, right above the REAL Ted Williams in Left Field  clap
