10411  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / July 4th Fireworks-moved from main discussion-ustream hogging memory on: 05-Jul-11, 10:39:01 PM

Finally!  Highlights!  And, as I said earlier, couldn't get it done in firefox.  And, as Shaky said, Main cam decided now, after weeks of behaving while staring at gravel, would be a good time to reset multiple times.  So it's in parts and the highlights from cam 1 will have to wait until tomorrow, but mostly got it all!

If an ad starts, wait it out, the video will resume after it's done...

The first 2 are distant fireworks south of town with some not bad for what it is audio of the Rochester Philharmonic.

Part 1   Part 2

And, the main event!

Part 3   Part 4

And, with that, goodnight!

I thought I remembered a thread from earlier this year about this...from CPF news via Big Frank via Donna...

Thanks! I'll post a video clip of the grand finale tomorrow morning.

Well, I've spent the last hour and a half trying to create a highlight clip without any luck. The Einsteins at Ustream have really outdone themselves this time. In their never ending effort to cram more ads into every video, they've broken the ability to create a highlight, at least on a Mac running any web browser. Maybe it works on Windows, but I don't have one handy this morning.

I'll give it a whirl later...and if not a regular highlight I'll try re-recording...

I have figured out why it's been plugging up the works in firefox...they've apparently enabled some sort of download video in realplayer feature...keeps giving me a plug in error & overtaking my whole cpu.  So far it seems to be cooperating in IE.  Probably can't finish it here, but it will get done...

I've been back & forth & forth & back about whether to come to Rochester July 15-17.  Obviously we won't be having the traditional fledge watch party  crying

I have the time off and the reservations, but my piggy bank took quite a hit this spring traveling twice to Florida.

Then I thought about one of the few things I regret in my life...I canceled a second trip to Rochester in 2008.  I never imagined how things would change the next year.

And there's Beauty & Archer to see and Unity to meet.  And I've never made it to Wild Wings.  And friends to see if anyone is in town...that's what it's really all about, after all.

So I'll be arriving late on Thursday, staying at the Hyatt until Sunday.  I'm planning on playing it by ear...hook up with whoever is out watching...road trip to Wild Wings if anyone is interested...a toast to all the beautiful grandeyases this year...there is a lot to celebrate!

!!! It’s amazing how a week can change things at one location!
July 02, 2011 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages
CPF Postmaster Reports:

July 2 - 2011
It’s amazing how a week can change things at one location.
With a free evening, I headed down to the Yellow Pages nest sight with camera in tow and was this aviation enthusiast treated to some spectacular flying by all the young ones and their parents.
At first it was what appeared to be dad and the red banded chick practicing food exchanges.
Then along came another chick from the nest building and, much to my surprise, the two chicks started impersonating mom and dad doing mock food exchanges with each other while flying through the air!
Both young ones eventually landed on the Investor’s Group building where, while only sitting for a minute, one of the juvie’s didn’t really like my presence and just like mom and dad started screeching at me before taking off towards me while the other bird, still sitting on the ledge, watched with amusement.
It was at this time that the young peregrine landed on the top of the high arch on the eastern side of the Investor’s Group building and, lo and behold, mom was sitting on the little bar jutting out to the north. Dad was on the south west corner of the Investor’s Group building after stooping at a red tailed hawk which was across the street at the Orthodox church. The third juvenile then appeared out of nowhere and landed on the north east corner of the building due south of the Investor’s Group building.
With sunlight quickly diminishing at about 8:15pm, the female then abandoned her perch with the juvenile who was sitting at the top of the arch flying directly behind her towards the Yellow Pages building. They reached the building and then proceeded to circle the building 4 times before both came to a landing on the antennae on the eastern side of the building.
During this time, the male and the other 2 juveniles remained perched on the Investor’s Group building and the building adjacent to it.
At approximately 8:30pm there was a boisterous sound from the Yellow Pages building where mom returned to the building with a fresh kill. She circled the building and landed on an open antenna with the juvenile then landing on the same antenna to consume the kill. Feathers could be seen flying everywhere from the antenna.
When I left the area at about 8:45pm, the adult female and one of the juveniles were on the Yellow Pages building and the adult male and 2 other juveniles were on the 2 buildings to the west.
It was a perfect evening, and all flights seen were not only strong but lengthy, showing that the skills of their parents have definitely been passed on to these young.

!!! A call for Fledge watch volunteers! We need your help!
July 04, 2011 - Toronto - Don Mills
CPF Postmaster Reports:

Kathy Smith reports today after spending some time at the Don Mills nest site today that baby Harlequin is progressing just fine and as we can all see by the Harlequin web camera, she is growing very quickly and will soon be taking her first flights!!

Quest & Kendal have been outstanding parents, as witnessed again today by Kathy’s observations of Quest as she tried to shelter baby Harlequin from the hot sun . There was some great family moment witnessed today with mom and daughter on the nest ledge!

We are looking for fledge watch volunteer support for this nest site, and will very soon be planning to hold the fledge watch training for all of those who are interested in participating.

Those that are interested are asked to come to the CPF web site and fill out the volunteer application form at: http://www.peregrine-foundation.ca/volunteerform.html

Please indicate that you are interested in the Don Mills fledge watch in the additional information or comments section. Please ensure that you have left us your telephone numbers so we can call you back with details of the fledge watch training sessions.

We will be starting the fledge watch Friday July 8th in the later afternoon - (early evening).

Hope to here from you soon.

Be sure to watch the Downtown Rochester fireworks live tonight on Rfalconcam streaming video channels 1 and 2. (Maybe channel 3 too.)

Will you be taping?  I'll have to miss it live this year...fireworks at 10 don't mix well with a 4:30 wakeup...sigh!

Yep.

Thanks!

I was having a moment of...not worry...wondering why Quest was sitting on the nestbox for so long & not seeing Harlie. Then I spotted something...

...beige strip on the tip of the tail.  It was Harlie sitting there all along!

Zoe and I were down at the Sheraton site from 12:30pm until 5pm.  We certainly didn't see as much as Linda, but did see several adults in the area, finally heard a noisy juvie flying somewhere nearby -- not Sunshine's vocalization, so may have been Kate -- and saw one juvie on top of 130.

Funny how you get to recognize their voices!  Thanks for keeping watch!
