Sure hope they consider giving Quest an enclosed box so she won't have to spend half her days being an Mumbrella from the sun & rain next year.
I'm noticing a different philosophy about boxes in Canada. It seems the preferred method is just what Quest has-a tray with well drained gravel, the only cover being what is provided by the spot the falcons chose. The only enclosed box I know of in Ontario is the hack box Linn was scoping out. And in the end Linn chose a completely exposed ledge. Go figure.

Isn't Carol P in contact with someone at Harlequin?
I am, but have no internet access at work. Didn't receive any texts or phone calls, so this is the first I've heard about it. Oh dear-I didn't know you were off line at work! And I don't have your phone #! Can you get RFC now tweets on your phone at work? If so, I'll post something there if something like this happens again. All's well that ends well...

I just talked to Marion Nash. They are preparing for Tuesday's banding. She said to let you all know. Everything is fine. PHEW!!!
Thanks, Donna. Did she tell you how or in what way they will approach the scrape? Lowered down from the roof? I'm sure down from the roof like they did putting the box in place. With the rope right there, will Quest leave Harlie alone in the scrape to hunt prey? She does not look too happy now. Will Kendal approach the nest to bring food? This is right about the time of day that Quest usually takes off for a bit, and then brings back dinner to Harlie. I wonder if she will leave.
I was just watching Quest preen, so she's calm about it now. All should be fine.

Speaking of cruising...obviously we haven't needed an updated map for Quest since April when she started nesting at Harlequin, although I would be interested to see how far she has strayed from the nest site in search of food & keeping the airspace clear. Are we all set to resume tracking once Harlequin successfully fledges?
The accuracy and frequency of the data does not allow us to determine how far she has strayed from the nest site other than to say that we have not seen her more than 5 miles away. This doesn't mean that she has or hasn't gone that far or even farther. The funding that GVAS received from NY years ago exclusively for satellite tracking ran out in March. The DEC took over paying for the tracking and has not said how long it will continue to do so. We will continue to track Quest this Fall as long as she is still wearing a working transmitter and the DEC is still paying for the tracking data. FYI, we were paying about $1000 per month to track her. The DEC may pay a lower "bulk" price because it tracks so many animals. Thanks. Hopefully DEC will continue and, if not, will let us know so we can see if there are any other options available.
