An article today in the local paper, the Times Herald Record (hopefully you'll be able to read it without trouble-they've started charging for online access)

The article says there are now 3 natural nests on the Shawangunk ridge.  I can see the ridge from my house, but the cliffs are on the other side.  I'll have to find a spot to just sit and watch.

Egg is going to be removed right now.

Egg is gone...First over the edge and then she picked it up and flew away with it.Was it stil Beauty on the eggs?

Definitely empty...at least we know...sigh...

Just spotted this over on CPF...a most excellent rescue that I decided to post here...read the story by Tracy Simpson on the CPF site to see why

Ok now I'm confused.     Beauty was off the eggs around 10:25 a.m.  I have looked at views of the eggs from all three cameras and only see 1 egg that is cracked.  The other two still look intact.  Oh the anxiety, still watching and praying.

I think the second egg crack in the 9:30 picture is actually one of Beauty's chest feathers. So far I've only seen one for sure broken egg.  I'm not saying the outcome will be any different than what we're all thinking, but they're still incubating, so who the heck knows.

When I was reading Mark Nash's thoughts earlier other nests that have gone awry came to mind...like Kathy Q & Kinney...one of the most reliable nests losing all but one eyas to...we don't even know what.

But, being the Pollyanna that I am, I had commented to someone yesterday...at least the population has rebounded well enough that the one unsuccessful nest isn't a tragedy.  20 years ago a year like this could have completely derailed the recovery effort.

In light of Ei's comments...

After talking with Mark Nash yesterday, he explained that all of Southern Ontario has experienced a lower than normal nest count. Some with no eggs, others with failed nestsites. Apparently this has been documented previously, that the change in weather has a major effect on the birds.  Even falconers who breed and raise young, have experienced the same in a captive environment this year.  Mark mentioned the mild winter, very rainy and cold spring.  He said other factors can affect the nesting, but when this occurs over an entire region, it is most likely Mother Nature.

Thanks for checking with him, Joyce.  And I do consider Rochester to be "southern Ontario" since "our" birds obviously do.

6:45 PM  saw a hole in one of the eggs-anyone else see it?

I hate to admit it, but I did. Sigh.

Click on the picture top left for the webcam.  There's a long list of active sites down the left side of the page, but only a few have cams right now.

Record Newswatch May 24, 2011

From my local paper-the peregrines start at 4:02.  These guys are right in my backyard...I am determined to see them this year.  Just have to figure out where on the bridge the nest box is.  Might have better luck following a parent in with a meal...gonna try to get there this weekend.

Does this mean they might be starting over?

Not likely, since they haven't given up on the current clutch.  Most likely just renewing their pair bond.  But if they do give up I'm not entirely sure they would re-clutch, though Big Frank did report there have been some very late successful nests in southern Ontario.
