While I was looking out the back window today I caught a few visitors... Mr. Squirrel chillin' Some of the Juncos are particularly dark this year Movement on the hill caught my eye... The whole herd had come racing down the hill. I think I count 11. There were 3 more off to the right and 2 more still coming down the hill. This one stopped to say Hi! on her way through. Ei

I see this bird in my yard all winter, but it has never sat still long enough to get a picture before. Not that it's a great picture by any means, but the field marks for an ID are there... "...note the single dark spot or 'stickpin' on the breast, and the solid red-brown cap. Bill dark above, yellow below; 2 white wing bars." (Peterson's Eastern Birds) S is for American Tree Sparrow ( Spizella arborea) All about birdsI'm sure the American Tree Sparrow was posted before, but I wanted to post it again to show a not so great picture can often be enough for a good ID. A nice video caught today of Lily, Hope & the 2 new cubs. Lilly Hope Nubie2Who is where when the video opens: Hope is to the left, Lily to the right. Lily is half sitting/half lying facing the camera curled over the cubs-you're mostly seeing the top of her head at the beginning. The best view of the cubs is around 13:18 CST Generally speaking, bears only give birth every 2 years so this "mixed age litter" is unusual. The researchers have been wondering how Hope would react-it seems her mothering instincts are coming out. You can see her licking one of the cubs at around 13:20 CST. Ei

I have a lot of problems with the view, figuring out which way she's facing, etc. All I see is a black form moving as she breathes. Does anyone else have this problem, and does anyone have any hints as to how to view her? Thanks.
Whenever I've looked at the cam, that's all I see too. It can be hard figuring it out-they put the cam closer this year, but it's wireless & battery operated, so it's grainier than last year. I haven't been able to get the cam running at work today, so I'm not sure right now. Last night Lily was lying on her left side with her back to the camera-head left, feet right-with Hope in the back facing Lily-head left, feet right. I usually keep looking for a hint of ear to figure out where the head is. Sometimes you just have to wait for them to look at the camera. And someone usually posts directions on the facebook page. Ei

Here's how to make the world's best b'loney sammich with poke 'n beans and some cone bread on the side. Remember that there should be no gap in your meat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVOID53WCaU#Lou PS Who's going to be the first volunteer to try this? I take exception to your introduction; the man does have an 'r' in his pork, though not so much in his cone bread. This feller's accent is, sadly, very familiar. My dad used to make us fried bologna...but I am from Kentucky, after all. My dad's specialties were sweet tea, fried bologna, and grilled cheese sandwiches. Love that cone bread! BTW, notice anything different about how this topic is displayed? Embedded player! Anything new we need to know to do it for ourselves? Ei

Actually there is still a working elevator that uses this elevator shaft. In fact, the elevator was up inside the top section yesterday.

Well, learn something new every day. I thought it was as defunct as the restaurant. Thanks! Ei
