O is for Spotted Eagle Owl

The Spotted Eagle-owl (Bubo africanus) is a medium-sized species of owl, one of the smallest of the Eagle owls. Its height is forty-five cm (18 inch) and its weight is from 480 to 850g (1 to 1.8 pounds). It has a 33cm (13 in) wingspan. The facial disk is off white to pale ochre and the eyes are yellow. It has prominent ear tufts, and the upper body is dusky brown, the lower parts off-white with brown bars. (Wikipedia)

This is Teeny from the Pot Plant Owl in Johannesburg, SA.  Teeny was very ill and spent a few days in rehab, but is doing very well now.  All 3 young owls fledged successfully.

Something about #90 (and its color variations) is attracting me.

And I keep going back to 55 (and all its color variations).

And 46-though it might be better as a design in its own right-might lose some important detail in logo size.

And 45 for its cleverness.

I love the regal portrait quality of 36, though probably not what we're looking for exactly.

This is a tough one...

Oh...and 74/77...can't forget that one...

This morning was the first time I witnessed Beauty on the Crossroads building which is on the northeast corner of Main St. at State St. If you'll recall Jemison and Callidora landed on it a few times when they were fledging. We (watchers) believe this is the building Jemison flew into before he ended up on the grass in front of the Rochester Plaza Hotel on the morning of 7-3-10. The sight of his first rescue that fateful day. The hotel is next to this building to the north on State St. Just wanted to explain so that people could understand. It was the first thing I thought of when I saw Beauty land on it this morning. Have a great day everyone! heart heart heart heart

Crossroads is the shorter dark building to the left of OCSR on cam 4

One of the employees of Lennox Generating Station mentioned that they may have seen Quest near the plant a few days ago.

I'm glad they're still watching out for her!

I caught this one of Chewbacca the Wookie Cat today.  I NEVER see him in the cat tree because, well, he just doesn't fit...as you can see here...

And a few more from this weekend...

I caught this tufted titmouse in the act...he looks none too happy with me   Wink

I looked out the window and saw this deer napping in the back...

I thought I saw some movement on the other side of the tree...but I didn't see anything at first other than the bird...

...until he turned his head around to look at me...

Talk about camouflage!

I love it and I'm curious for the words of this nursery rhym or what is it?
I understand patty cake and a baker.
greetings Aafke

There are several versions of the nursery rhyme, but this is the one I remember

Pattycake, Pattycake, baker’s man,
Bake me a cake as fast as you can;
Roll it, pat it, mark it with a B,
Put it in the oven for baby and me.

Pattycake started as pat-a-cake, which actually makes more sense.  And this bit about the clapping game from wikipedia...

The game

The rhyme is often accompanied by hand-clapping between two people, a clapping game. It alternates between a normal individual clap with two-handed claps with the other person. The hands may be crossed as well. This allows for a possibly complex sequence of clapping that must be coordinated between the two. If told by a parent to a child, the "B" and "baby" in the last two lines are sometimes replaced by the child's first initial and first name.

Anne, first I want to say I'm glad you are here and to thank you for speaking your mind.  If no one says anything, no one knows there is something wrong.

I have actually been pondering the changes in the dynamics of this group.  I think it actually dates back to when Kodak decided to wipe its hands of the falconcam (and, subsequently, the falcons).  Suddenly, our social group that formed to keep in touch with friends during the off season became the ONLY access to the falcons.  Roles changed-and I do thank, from the bottom of my heart, every single person who stepped up to the plate to keep "our" falcons available to the world.  If they had not-I shudder to think where we would be right now.  But it also had to become a business-a not-for-profit, but a business none the less.  I think in many ways we're still working out all the kinks.  I don't know what the answer is, but if people are feeling left out, then we need to discuss it.

I have been feeling lately that this forum is finally settling in and feeling more interactive like the old board (ABCs of birds as an example).  Maybe it's just "growing pains".  I don't know, but I do know that EVERY member is important. Every single one, whether you express an opinion or not. Period.

We will figure this out.  Ei

I'm leaving this up to you guys. Can't see any detail, every time I try to use the spy glass
it shows a lock. If I do get it to enlarge all I get is the bottom of the box with the number.
You can't scroll up to see the rest. ???
It's all yours folks.

I haven't been using that feature-same thing happens to me.  What has worked is to click on the logo-it brings you to a page with the all logos in a strip at the top and the one you selected slightly larger below.  Single click on the slightly larger logo should bring up a large version of it where you can see the detail.

So while I was browsing for a good white breasted nuthatch picture I ran across this picture.  When I took it in July I didn't realize what it was.  Picasa's I'm feeling lucky (which is exaggerating the color) revealed a House Finch feeding its fledgling...

One more "N" entry:  Nuthatch!  Despite having plenty of White-breasted Nuthatches in Kentucky, I've never managed to take a picture of one.  I do have this photo, which is of a Pygmy Nuthatch, taken in Bryce Canyon National Park.

One White-breasted nuthatch coming up!
