12031  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Are we back? on: 15-Nov-10, 04:09:02 PM
Yes, we're back. I posted it in the ShoutBox.

There is a forum option to display the ShoutBox on every forum page, not just the forum home page. Do people think this would be useful? It will take up space on your screen, and the ShoutBox is often empty. That's a lot of screen real estate for nothing.

I don't think it's necessary on every page.  I started this thread as a test post when you posted there you thought we were back.

12032  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / A request from the KFC board on: 15-Nov-10, 04:00:34 PM
There has been some discussion over on the KFC Yahoo board these past few days.  There are some members who really don't like this type of forum for one reason or another.  This note isn't to debate the merits of either format.  Everyone has their preference and we need to respect that.

However, one item has been mentioned a few times over there that I think those of us posting over here could easily accommodate.  When the posts "echo" to the other board from here it strips the sender's name.  While there are ways around it, people have asked if we could sign our posts here so they can see who is writing.  I'm going to try to do that.  I hope you will join me.

Saturday, November 13

The cub's sex will be announced late next week - stay tuned for exciting details!

Why on earth are they waiting until next week?  My guess would be...if they know for sure this early, it's a boy!

Goshawk(Northern)

From the Cornell Lab of Ornithology

A powerful raptor of northern forests, the Northern Goshawk is the largest North American accipiter. It maneuvers through dense woods, taking prey as small as squirrels and as large as grouse, crows, and snowshoe hare.

Attila the Hun wore an image of a Northern Goshawk on his helmet.

{Wishing the Yahoo group posts could automatically echo over here}

Hey, that's a cousin of my Teenage Mutant Ninja Junco!

There's a gray morph northern Goshawk who migrates through my
neighborhood every spring and fall. He spends a few days harvesting
crows, and then moves on again.

I called him the TMNJ because the only other birds I've ever seen with
that soft gray color and white chest are the juncos that snarf up the
spilled seed under my bird feeders. I posted a picture of him here the
first time he showed up (nailed a crow just a few feet in front of me on
my morning walk!) and several kfalconcammers identified him as a gray
morph northern goshawk. He came back, right on schedule, at the end of
September this year.

Pretty bird!

G is for Gyrfalcon

From Cornell All About Birds:

"The largest falcon in the world, the Gyrfalcon breeds in arctic and subarctic regions of the northern hemisphere. It preys mostly on large birds, pursuing them in breathtakingly fast and powerful flight. "

And remember this article about the 2500 year old gyrfalcon nest in Greenland?

"A 2,500-year-old bird's nest has been discovered on a cliff in Greenland.

The nesting site is still continually used by gyrfalcons, the world's largest species of falcon, and is the oldest raptor nest ever recorded.

Three other nests, each over 1,000 years old, have also been found, one of which contains feathers from a bird that lived more than 600 years ago. "

We're all still here.  When the whole falconcam site was first upgraded to all the neat things it has now, we had to post news in both places.  It got to be crazy, so Shaky did his magic and set up an autoposting thing so everything from here goes there too.  But many of us still go over there...I know I do when I get behind in reading the posts.  And to check for messages from those who haven't migrated to here yet.

It's good to see you Mt. Woman!  Come around more often!

Everyone: what's Ginormous Gull staring in my windshield in the photo way below? I don't know my gulls at all.

My first thought was-well, it's not a ring bill.  Clues-red spot lower bill, wings appear dark, pink legs, seen at Peidras Blancas, San Simeon, CA.  I'll say Western Gull.

From http://www.spwickstrom.com/seagull/

Cool fact from Cornell

Like most gulls, the Western Gull is an opportunistic feeder, capturing its own live prey, scavenging refuse, or stealing food from seals and other gulls. It is known to steal milk from lactating female seals while they lie on their backs sleeping on the beach.

G is for Green-winged teal

This guy was found at Birdchick with more pictures

"At first glance, they may appear brown, but their heads rival any mallards with the rich rusty read accented by a swath of iridescent green behind the eye–like eye shadow gone wild.  This is the smallest dabbling duck in North America, so besides the color, they are quite cute.  They will forage for aquatic insects on the water’s surface or dip below for vegetation."

Showing his green wing

paperbag I had this whole thing copied over and ready to post in its own post last night then...DUH...tomorrow is G day

Callidora looks so cute!  (must budget-one calendar...one ornament...well, OK, maybe 2...and enough for one of those display thingys since I don't do a tree...)

Hey EI.  Must be your work computer.  I'm able to see the M&K pic on mine.  It's one of those classic stand-off pictures.  Love it!!!

I just voted 103 times so now the West Street crowd has to make up a 206-vote deficit.

Any of you "ladies" think you can beat my number?

Hey!  I resemble that remark!  gum
