Pretty sure I've posted this one before, but it popped up again on I has a hotdog...

12182  Rochester Falcons / Falcon Watches / Re: Twitter on: 17-Sep-10, 08:42:41 AM

As Donna is asking a question, I have one.

Some posts speak of Peregrine Falcons migrating... will "ours"? Or do they stay in ROC for the winter? Why do some go and some stay?

Thanks, Experts!

Last year Beauty stayed the winter and Archer migrated (the last watch report with him in it that I found on a quick look was 09/26).

Why some do & some don't is really a good puzzle.  I don't know that anyone has quite figured it out, but there has been some discussion on one of the Red tail blogs I follow-I'll have to do some research this weekend...

Apparently, there's no consensus as to why the birds get stuck...I'll keep hunting...

Ok,  I may have to walk around like this paperbag but I don't understand how they got stuck in the light.  Is it that they are flying in it and don't know how to fly out? I don't know how thick the light is so no sure how they wouldn't fly in light and darkness

This particular light display is so bright the light almost appears solid.  I think the high contrast between the light beams and the surrounding darkness confuses the birds into thinking the dark is actually a solid wall, so they just keep flying around "inside".  Probably something similar with the stadium lights Carol experienced.

And I'm so glad most of the eggs hatched...

In two stages, the seven chicks went back into three different peregrine nest sites. All the birds successfully fledged – all blissfully unaware their lives had started somewhere in the valleys of south Wales.

I posted this last week, but it is more appropriate in this thread.

Hubble Pointed at "Nothing"

Humbling.

Here is what happened when professional astronomers pointed the Hubble Space
Telescope at what appeared to be absolutely nothing and left it there, first
for 10 days, and then for 11 days. Then they made the images into a 3-D
presentation. You have got to watch this one, it's "incredible".

I meant to say thank you for this link last week, but by the time I got done poking around I lost track of who posted it...so thanks Gayle!
